What an absolutely beautiful, strange book. I’ve never read anything quite like it. The prose is complicated, lovely, and rich in meaning. It’s specificity somehow simultaneously reveals the universality of the struggle to love and to live. I imagine I could read this book every day and find something new in each sentence.

this book changed my life to be honest

(some men love to lecture you about the essential ineffability of the universe before they sleep with you)

Sometimes I felt like I was reading a literary masterpiece, other times I felt bored and wondered why Clarice Lispector wrote a book on the endless self-analysis and Godly tribulations of a detached character.
I am not sure that I really appreciated the idea that Lóris is in need of guidance and basically life lessons from a man… BUT, this is my 21st Century self talking.
The prose is still incredible and the journey pleasant, I just think that I need to re-read the book without bias or expectations to truly enjoy it.

Introspective, a little wacky, melancholic... but ultimately the main character remains a cipher.

Clarice Lispector should be a required coming-of-age for people who haven't come of age in their 20s
