I am in love with Rae Carson's writing. She has definitely become one of my favorite authors.

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 is because the whole Hector and Elisa situation annoyed me. JUST SAY HOW YOU FEEL DARN IT!

Onto the final book!

This one is so much better than the first book!

Parts of the book were a little slow and I got frustrated quite a bit throughout the book at the person Elisa was becoming, but the ending was great and gave me hope that things will be better in the next book.

Rae Carson gives us a thrilling sequel to The Girl of Fire and Thorns, the enchanting first novel in the Fire and Thorns series.

Elisa has saved the kingdom and is now the sole monarch, but foreign enemies are still knocking at her door threatening her life and usurpers linger around every corner. The amount of people Elisa can trust is becoming fewer and fewer.

The Girl of Fire and Thorns was a fun read. It had a generous amount of romance and action. What surprised me about The Girl of Fire and Thorns was the ending, it didn’t propel you to read the next two books in the series (at the time that I read it - all three books were already published). It felt like an okay stand alone novel.

The Crown of Embers is different and rightly so. We’ve been introduced into Elisa’s exotic world and we’re invested in these characters Carson has gifted us with.

Elisa is growing up and developing into her own - as a ruler and as a friend. She questions her leadership and her power, experimenting with both. Elisa isn’t a simple wayward queen, she has her faults and doubts. That’s what makes her so refreshing and easy to read - she’s so easy to follow. I’m rooting for Elisa and her successes.

The Crown of Embers is fast paced with a healthy dose of action, palace intrigue, and romance. The action was intense. The romance was amazing! It left me fanning myself. Oh goodness!

The characters are distinctive and all have unique voices and quirks. You can’t help falling in love with a few of them (ahem, Mara and Hector).

The internal conflict rumbling underneath is powerful, not petty and insignificant at all (for the moment). The war with the Inviernos becomes more compelling and interesting by the second, it leaves you guessing and wanting to know more.

The Crown of Embers is full of ups and downs and twists and turns. It leaves you wanting more. I can’t wait to pick up the final book, The Bitter Kingdom.

Did I mention how much I loved this book? I loved it.

Quotable Quotes: “I love you the way a drowning man loves air. And it would destroy me to have you just a little.” - Hector

Pick this up if you like: action, palace intrigue, romance, fantasy, no love triangles, female leads,

4.5 🌟

While the pacing of this book was a bit slow in the beginning, it quickly picked up and became a whirlwind of romance and political intrigue and power. I loved loved loved it.

I want the third book. I like Elisa a lot more in this second book. She finally realizes that she can be the queen she needs to be. She and Hector dance around each other throughout the entire book and it only adds to the action and makes the story more enjoyable. I don't know how I'm going to wait a year for the last book.

TO be honest I loved this book. As seen with the four star rating. The diction and writing of this novel were effortless and clear. They made the book easy to read and help the reader to live inside the novel. The love relationship in this book was amazing. Nothing felt forced, I adored the characters, and the relationship the had was completely natural. The pacing of this novel was slow in enough that one could enjoy the moments within the story but also fast enough that you wouldn't get bored. Everything about this book was well done and fabulous.

This was even better than the girl of fire and thorns. It was a great second book and the love interest was swoon worthy. But that ending is one of the worst cliff hangars ever! I was never bored of this and I was turning pages like crazy.

I am at a loss for words at how amazing this was
