The Sister

So I enjoyed this book. I didn't know how it was going to end up playing out so that was a good sign. As the book moved along I was hooked. I would have given this book a four. But the fact that she said Jo was the oldest March sister in Little Women and had some grammar mistakes it's a three.

Pretty good

Definitely had me almost check the end first as I was tense to find out what was going to happen. A tiny bit predictable, but definitely enjoyable.

Kinda predictable.
Update:
Changed my review from a 3 star to a 2 star. This book just had too much going on and was still predictable.

Grace is going through a very tough time coping up with her best friend Charlie's death.
The last she would have seen Charlie, the last words from Charlie would be "I did something terrible, I hope you can forgive me"
She decides to start a campaign to look for Charlie's father via social media - she gets one response, thereby she meets Anna who is nice and is all curious to know about her half sister!
During the days she spends with Anna, things go a little haywire in Grace's life - her boy friend is all upset that Anna is living with them for a few days and is always in a snappy mood!

The book is written as "Then" and "Now", that makes it even more interesting as we get to know all about their past and also makes you curious as to what is happening in the present

Overall this was a very interesting read - i thought Anna was an imposter and at some point, she was the Sister, and then it went back & forth in my head making me look forward to what exactly will happen!
dark tense medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: Plot
Strong character development: No
Loveable characters: No
Diverse cast of characters: No
Flaws of characters a main focus: No

I kinda wish we found out more of what happened at the end of the book? It was just sort of hastily squeezed in at the last 2 pages... I still have questions.

Unfortunately I wasn't as blown away by this book as most people seem to have been. I listened to the audio version and perhaps that is why. I'm starting to realise that, for me, audio books lose something that you get from reading a book. I'm not sure, perhaps it is the fact that it's easy to lose concentration during an audio book, whereas one is more focused during actual reading. Anyway, for me this book was enjoyable without being brilliant. The big twists weren't that amazing for me, and overall I just felt a little unmoved when i finished this book.

A gripping book with an interesting - if a little unrealistic - storyline. All in all an excellent debut novel.
This is one of those books that I just couldn't put down, there were so many twists and turns and nail-biting moments that I just had to keep turning the page. Jensen managed to seamless switch between 'Then' and 'Now' which was great - I never really felt lost, which I so often do with more seasoned authors.
Unfortunately there was a little too much crammed into this story for my liking - which made it pretty unrealistic, and the characters themselves weren't the most relatable.

I would definitely read another Louise Jensen again.

Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Best friends. Besties. BFFs. The importance of having a special best friend is SO very important to adolescent girls. Sometimes these important friendships last until adulthood. Some are lifelong. Some end in death...

Grace Matthews has had a traumatic childhood. She lost her Dad in a traffic accident when she was young and has always blamed herself for her part in his demise. Her Mum surrendered to her grief and was unable to look after Grace which precipitated Grace leaving the Devon coast which she loved and going to live with her grandparents in Oxfordshire.

Grace's first day at her new school is memorable in that it is then she meets and befriends Charlie - her BFF. Both girls are fatherless which strengthens their bond. Charlie gives Grace a necklace that is half of a heart. Charlie wears the other half... If they only knew that hearts would really be broken.

When the story starts the reader is aware that Grace is now a young woman in her late twenties AND that Charlie has died. Grace has spent four months grieving her beloved friend and is only now beginning to come to terms with her loss. Part of her healing process is to dig up a memory box that she and Charlie buried when they were fifteen years old.

Charlie's last words to Grace were "I did something terrible, Grace. I hope you can forgive me".

The reader wonders along with Grace... What could Charlie have done???

Grace now works in a preschool. It is a job she loves and she is very fond of the children who attend the school. She lives with her boyfriend, Dan who went to school with her and Charlie. She has a pet cat, Mittens, whom she adores. All in all, life is good if it were not for missing Charlie.

Then Anna enters her life. Anna is the sister that Charlie never knew about. A half-sister. She reminds Grace of her dead friend and wants to help her out of a bad patch. She invites Anna to come and live with her and Dan temporarily until she gets back on her feet.

The reader gradually comes to realize that Anna is manipulative and dangerous. Grace is naively unaware and I wanted to scream at Grace to watch out for her! So frustrating! Horrible things start to happen. Grace's paranoia increases - with good reason as it turns out...

Written in two time periods labelled "NOW" and "THEN" with the 'then' taking the reader back to the girls' adolescence, the novel explores the corrosive effects that guilt and betrayal can play upon the psyche. It also questions if we can every really know another person. Everyone has secrets, hidden depths that they choose to not share.

"The Sister" is an assured debut thriller that will be appreciated by all fans of the genre. The tension mounts as Grace's life and everything she holds dear is increasingly put in jeopardy. A chilling novel rife with suspicion and revelations doled out in increments to make the tension palpable, "The Sister" delivers an ending twist that thriller readers will appreciate.

Het digitale boek gekocht voor nog geen euro op bol.com. Mijn eerste leeservaring op tablet/iphone (toch liever papier als je al de hele dag gescherm-d hebt). Wel graag gelezen. Ik geef 3,5 sterren.

First a special thanks to Louise Jensen, Netgalley and Bookouture for my ARC of "The Sister" in exchange for a review.

Loved, loved, loved it!!!!

When I first started "The Sister" I honestly thought it started out a little slow for me. I was about 15% into it when WOW! out of the blue it grabbed me by the tail and pulled me in full force. The story skyrocketed, got so intense and was very hard to put down. My thoughts were so wrong at different times, wondering and guessing who did it and why? Why was Grace always the target? What was Charlie sorry about? Then came the questions of: Could it be someone that was mentioned earlier on? Could it be Abby? Could Charlie actually know? Maybe, Chloe was tormenting Grace? Maybe Grace's Dad's accident wasn't really an "accident". The possibilities were running rampant in my mind until the end. And, Anna wow! didn't see that coming. Oh.my.goodness! the end was phenomenal!!!!

Questions from Louise at the end asks:
1. Did you end up feeling sympathy for Anna? Hmmm, yes I did. Anna had nothing in the beginning of her life. She didn't know who her real family was, lost her husband and child. But still she could of done things a bit different.
2. Compassion for Lexie? In a way, yes. She had 2 babies very young with losing her own family and the father of her children. Again, Lexie could of turned her life around and made things better instead of drowning herself in a bottle. But through the end my heart broke for her losing so much in such a short time.
3. Should Grace give Dan a second chance? That depends. We really don't know if that was really him in the video Anna took. I mean she was that rotten and could of taped with someone else and said it was him. Grace didn't see the recording, Anna said it was him. Second chance? Well maybe later they could be able to work things out now that we know what is about to happen.

I truly can not wait for book 2. Please hurry :)
