A thin, elliptical tale following a government agent known as the Signalman as he hunts a cult-y grifter. This charismatic creep attracts followers in the service of an alien intelligence that hopes to take over the Earth, because of course. The Signalman works with a being who is older than she appears—like *much*—and exists in many points in time simultaneously. Mind-bending, trippy, and dark, if only this were a good long novel I could have really sunk into. As it is, it was over just when I was getting really interested.

This book captures a moment in time as the world faces a threat of some unknown cosmic horror- a good pick for fans of Lovecraftian tales, which I definitely am. I liked it overall (particularly the spooky supernatural ideas throughout), but there were two elements that kept it firmly in the "like" rather than "love" category.

The first thing is that the writing has this uniformly snappy, irreverent, stream of consciousness thing going on that I know a lot of people love but that I find  to be kind of self conscious. I just find I have less and less patience for that particular kind of stylized writing as time goes on.

The second thing is that up until the very end the story feels like it's populated by beginnings, one right after the other. That's very good for creating intrigue, but at a certain point I just wanted it to hit a stride and come together towards a cohesive goal. It eventually does, but it just didn't feel meaty enough to me.

For people who like to swim in the ocean because they can't tell what may be swimming beneath them.

A funny-peculiar little novella. A medium boiled writing style and a zombie-ant-like alien invasion, tossed with a funny-haha dose of tinfoil hatness. What’s not to like? I never saw X-Files or read Lovecraft, so I surely missed a lot of resemblances and homages. But I did get others, as I did not grow up in a backwater. Don’t come here for big depth of character and you’ll be fine. Now on to Black Helicopters.

Disturbing and atmospheric but I couldn't really get into it. Longer review will, probably, appear. Not today though.
