EPIC. This is entirely the book I need to carry with me at all times like a talisman against current events.
It is entirely the book that it is, until it wasn't anymore.

This novella was sent to me by the publisher, Tor.com, at no cost. It will be on sale on 28 Feb, 2017.
If you're looking for resolution and answers, do not come to Caitlin Kiernan.
If you're looking for a linear narrative that moves smoothly through chronological time, do not come to Agents of Dreamland.
If you're afraid of mushrooms or fungus, do not read this novella.
And if you're concerned that beings Out There are coming to get us, and that people Down Here are trying to hide that fact... well, you might want to read this, but it won't give you any reassurances one way or another.
There's a Waco-syle whacko, and a glitch with New Horizons (which really happened!), and super-secret agents trying to figure out exactly what's going on and how to save the world. Which may not be possible but I guess we'll try anyway, and it may require copious amounts of coping alcohol.
Kiernan develops a vision of possible impending doom across the twentieth and twenty-first century, mostly through the experiences of two opaque secret agents and one ex-junkie. It's not always an easy read but it's definitely a gripping one. Definitely recommended.

i really agree with a review i read saying this feels like the first 1/3 of a novel, really weird as its own book because right as it starts going it ends. also the audiobook is NOT great.

I read this on a sleepless night in COVID quarantine, and - first of all - boy, do I know how to pick reading material. The contagion elements of the story were maybe a little more frightening than they would have been given the circumstances.
I really liked this story. It hit all the notes I like in a cosmic horror tale. I loved the southwest Americana, the static on the TV, the creepy cult, and the men in black suits keeping tabs on them. I just wish the book had been a little longer. I wanted to hear more of the story--to see if the Signalman could avert the future Immacolata experienced. And ultimately it was just a little too short for me to justify the cost of the kindle edition.

I really need to learn to read the reviews before I pick up certain books. If a book is described as Lovecraftian, I will likely not enjoy it.
This had such an interesting premise, but it was jarringly divided and jumped around so much that I had a hard time grasping what was happening. It felt like all the words were floating over my head instead of me really absorbing them. That type of lofty writing may be for some people, but it's certainly not for me.

This novella is stunning, riffing on Lovecraft in a distinctly Kiernan manner and I loved every word of it. The shifts between timelines are well done and (to my mind) Kiernan's luscious prose imbues a creepy rather than horror tone to the story. In many ways, I think this is more appropriate.
The only criticism I can make is that I want more, and I sincerely hope we get more stories from this world.

Intriguing and unsettling, I’m curious to continue on but I’m still a bit confused. There were multiple narrators and times that the story to us presented and I think we’re not supposed to have a clear picture, but I did enjoy the glimpses I got.
