I will read this again. It is such a wonderful coming of age story. I hope they don’t ruin it by turning it into a movie.
Disappointed that I just couldn’t get into this book, and I think the reason is that all the characters seemed like caricatures… I didn’t feel invested or connected to any of them… I skimmed the second half to get to the end. The end was fantastic. This book was not for me, but I can see why others love it.
Spoiler alert: they never get to California in the book. Second spoiler: every detour possible happens. I was fraught with anxiety the whole time, "would they get where they are going?" "would all our characters be reunited?" "would the many threads of the novel that were so cleverly unraveled ever returned to be knit together again?"
But I needn’t have worried because this story concludes in a scene so wonderful, so clever {dare I say brilliantly Machiavellian} that all justice is restored, & my fears were assuaged. (& the Cohen brothers are kicking themselves for not thinking of it first)
One of my biggest gripes about the story is that there is no kissing.

Wow what an amazing ride this was. Such a wonderful journey with unforgettable, endearing characters. So many quotable paragraphs filled with wisdom. Mr Towles has yet to disappoint me!!
