I didn’t like this, and no one is more surprised than me. I love Towles’ other books, but this one just didn’t have the elegance and finesse that made his other works so special.

This title started out slowly. In fact, when some other books came available at the library, I returned this title while only being at 22%. Though I hadn’t completely given up on this title…and I’m glad I didn’t for the story wrapped up neatly with a few surprises along the way.

Different than I expected, and I was not nearly satisfied with the ending - I wanted about 10 more chapters to see where the rest of the characters ended up!

The Lincoln Highway is a story about 18 year old Emmett who was driven home by the warden from a juvenile work farm due to his father’s early death. He and his younger brother plan to drive to California for a fresh start, but that changes when he finds out that two of his friends from the work farm have hidden in the Warden’s car and have a plan for an expedition to New York.
This is told from multiple points of view, which I love those stories. Dialogue isn’t in quotation marks which took some getting used to.
This book was very slow for me, it took a long time to get to any real excitement, and I couldn’t stand the character of Duchess which was probably on purpose. It was okay. Not something I feel the need to reread.
