Great characterization of complex characters, but a disappointing end let me down.

Amor Towles is a master at crafting unique characters that are authentic and whole. The magic of his books lies in the sharpness of the characters, their quirks and their flaws, and your investment in them.
A fine read but not what I expected. Perhaps that was the point.
Such a rewarding, fun, profound journey whose minor setbacks don’t take away from the experience.
Towles’s greatest strength is the overwhelming humanity of his characters. I loved Sally, Emmett, Billy, Woolly, Ulysses, and Duchess most of the time.
I also appreciated what I think the overarching theme is, avoiding destination addiction, and I felt a renewed hunger for adventure as I progressed.
I am torn on the ending. Emmett puts Duchess in a position that I think is wildly irresponsible, making it so that if Duchess gets greedy, it means his death. Would that ever be a predicament Emmett would be okay with? It felt out of character, on top of leaving Woolly’s body to be discovered months later, without notifying Woolly’s lovely sister. Even though I found Duchess’s lack of selflessness and his inability to see the periphery infuriating at points, I never saw a fitting ending for his character to be death.
Still, a relatively minor misstep for how much I loved the rest of this book. Each word was so so so juicy that the book’s length felt entirely justified. Loved it.
9/10

Wasn’t sure of this book at times but looking back it was really a book about adventure

.... I will say I finished it. I am proud of it. It is a BIG book (576 pages) and it wasn't 'fun'. As I neared the ending I could see a bit of my normal Towles magic shine through. .....
