I made the mistake of reading the jacket and that gave away the beginning of the story. I spent most of the rest of the book dreading what was coming next.

Its reputation is deserved. Thought-provoking and moving with an interesting slice of viewpoint characters in both third and first person (and one of the latter is a charming sociopath whose head is kinda distressing to hang out in). There was a feeling that some characters were keeping the reader at a bit of a remove which I often find irritating but this time it felt more natural. The little boy maybe was a bit one of those precocious wonder children who are not quiiiiite believable, but such an awesome one that I'll give him a pass.
Hands down my favorite book of the year--the Great American Novel if ever there was one! A roadtrip adventure set in the 1950s, featuring three "juvenile delinquent" teenage boys, a precocious little brother, and an amazing and memorable cast of characters from Kansas to NYC. Looking for a fresh start, these boys travel by car, by train, and even by boat, along the Lincoln Highway route, rather than the Mississippi River, to seek their fortunes and find redemption among those they've wronged and those who have wronged them. We slowly learn how Woolly, Duchess, and Emmett ended up in a boys' detention center in Salinas, KS for various "crimes"; our heartstrings sing for sweet Billy and his love of heroes, we yearn for Odysseus to find peace. Towles gives us exceptional descriptions of ordinary settings; we feel like we're sitting at every table--from Sally's home-cooked meals, to Howard Johnson's to an Italian feast fit for a celebrity. This book was the trip of a lifetime--not to be forgotten!
