Mám ráda knihy A.C.

I kept forgetting this novel wasn't by Arthur Conan Doyle, and that is high praise indeed! It's creepy and horrible, but also brilliantly well done. Kudos to Horowitz.

Horowitz writes pastiche so well. He captured Doyle's writing, but it still reflects his own style. It drips with emotion from the moment the story opened up to the last page. This is something that uniquely stood out even though the narrative is patterned on Doyle.

After reading Magpie Murders and The Word is Murder I was SO excited to read this book. I absolutely devoured those two books and couldn’t get enough Anthony Horowitz. I picked up this one excited to read his take on the world of Sherlock Holmes and found... it was a bit of a struggle.

I had a hard time getting into the story and keeping myself engaged. I also found myself just so... annoyed at what I took to be Watson’s constant bewilderment at anything and everything Sherlock did. I haven’t read any of the original Sherlock Holmes stories so I’m not sure if that’s how they normally are.

I’ll be sticking with this authors other murder mystery stories but I’d recommend this to anyone who loves murder mysteries and is a fan of Sherlock Holmes.

Took me some time to get through, but so worth it.

I have only read one of Doyle's works about Sherlock Holmes and John Watson (the very first), but this one by Horowitz is as close as anyone gets, I imagine. It is not surprising that Horowitz who has written episodes for Poirot and Midsomer Murders would be able to write a Sherlock novel, but that it was nearly equal to the works of Doyle is definitely a pleasant surprise.

The novel was off to a bit of a slow start, but that is how every mystery I've ever read starts and then you find yourselves not being able to sleep at 2 a.m. because you only have a few chapters left, and you need to know! It is addictive, and Sherlock Holmes in particular, always loving an audience to perform before, relishes the chance to unravel every bit of the mystery no sooner than just before the very end (while you are nervously watching the right part of your book become more slim by the minute and wonder whether everything will be resolved before the pages go blank).

Exciting Sherlock Holmes story, full of twists and turns. Had me guessing and re-guessing throughout, and definitely had my suspicions about certain characters... Until they had slipped my mind again.

Nicely done, and very much in the style of Arthur Conan Doyle. There's quite a bit here, including hidden keys, disguises, carriage chases, a sinister carnival and a locked-room mystery, all in a fairly short book.

I do wish that there were a better way to denote evil-minded individuals than children in peril, however.
