I offer a 5-star rating whenever a book fully realizes the implicit promise it made to its prospective reader. This book does exactly that- resurrecting Dr. Watson’s narrative voice almost perfectly and recreating a London (and a master detective) that are old friends to anyone who loved the original Sherlock Holmes stories. Horowitz doesn’t break new ground, but that’s a good thing- when the original is a masterpiece, followers should be homages, not disrupters.
That’s where so many of the “new” takes on Sherlock Holmes go wrong, in my view: they ignore or sabotage the source material. Alice in Wonderland as an overwrought Hunger Games-y situation, Sherlock Holmes catching feelings for a young “protege” - these are hatchet jobs.
By contrast, Horowitz’s appreciation of the source material is palpable and he creates a masterful new story from the old tales so many of us love.

I haven't actually read any original Sherlock Holmes books, but this one was fantastic, and I definitely want to read the rest.
Plenty of twists and turns, just enough evidence given to think you're on the right track, before something else happens and throws you onto a new track, and a fantastic wrap up by Holmes at the end

Horowitz captures the style, feel and essence of the original tales and provides an excellent, intriguing adventure, delving into darker than normal Holmes territory but managing the intricate plotting with admirable ease. Thoroughly enjoyed and couldn’t put down.

True to the source material with plenty of nods to the original series. The mystery itself is pretty good, though the pace is a bit slow and the clues to whodunnit a bit heavy handed.
Moderate: Pedophilia

Enjoyed this much more than I expected to. Although I was very interested to see how the author continued the Sherlock Holmes series, I rarely enjoy books with someone trying to write in the style of someone else. Normally, I find that I end up distracted by characters acting in ways that are not consistent with how they have behaved in previous books or the tone or language is not consistent with the author or time period. While reading this, I really felt that I was reading a novel by Arthur Conan Doyle.

I really enjoyed this read a lot. I listened to this on audiobook and I absolutely recommend it based on the narration alone. I've read quite a few Anthony Horowitz books in the past few months, and I really enjoy his writing style and storytelling . Can't wait to read the follow up!
