Charles Bukowski

3.51 AVERAGE

Does anyone write bolder, more pointed, unpretentious and funnier than Charles Bukowski? I doubt it. A pure, hilarious and non-sensical joy.

Very funny and witty...

Reread from forever ago. Story is kind of crazy. Bukowski’s prose doesn’t fiddle faddle around.

A satire of the private detective genre popularized by the likes of Raymond Chandler, Bukowski's take on the genre is over the top ridiculous and unhinged.

The writing is sloppy, the plot ridiculous and the characters are all grotesque exaggerations of the archetypes of the genre.

It all reads like Chinaski fantasizing with being a private detective on one of his drunken sleepless nights.

This is my first time reading Bukowski, and I have a feeling I probably should have started with a different book. That said, reading this book has made me want to read more by the author.

The book primarily makes fun of pulp detective stories, playing up their tired clichés. It makes for an amusing read and is short enough to get through in one or two sittings. Definitely recommend.
