Very good middle grade read. Straight forward writing that is both easy to read and gets you invested in the characters and the world around them. The plot is insightful, relevant, and hopeful, and with the mix of nuanced characters and well paced writing, it was an enjoyable read from start to finish. Never felt bored or lost (which are problems I struggle with when reading), and appreciated the genuine tone of the book. I think it would encourage kids to feel autonomous and heard, while presenting struggles they may face without dipping into the cynicism of many books I was made to read in middle school.

References to clothing brands etc felt like they were already sightly dated and the tone felt inauthentic i.e. very clearly an adult pretending to be a kid and not quite hitting the mark

A little on the nose but it is a good middle reads book about gentrification. I’ll try it out for book clubs.

I love middle grade that talks about social justice issues in an accessible way and I feel like this book really fit the bill for that!! I really liked the way the issue of gentrification was portrayed and discussed throughout the story and I feel like this story really gives younger readers the space to process and understanding what gentrification is. I also really appreciated the relationships that were explored in this book and how central they are to the plot. Overall, I just thought this was a really sweet book and I really enjoyed my time reading it and I think it’s one that a lot of kids will enjoy!

trigger warnings: gentrification, police brutality
rep: Black MC and mostly Black cast
