I really enjoyed this on audiobook. I liked the realism with fantasy/monster elements. The actual historical information and black struggles in America well and the world was informative. It helped me gain further understanding of their pain and hurt. I loved the healing aspects in the book as well.

La combinación entre ficción histórica, terror cósmico y comentario social en referencia a la situación de desprotección a la que se enfrentan las personas racializadas en Estados Unidos está muy bien conseguida en este libro, que cuenta, a través de un relato de fantasía que bebe de una realidad desgraciadamente ineludible, la lucha de Maryse y su gente contra el racismo, la supremacía blanca y el odio sin fundamento. Además, en la versión en castellano, el traductor, queriendo priorizar las intenciones del autor en cuanto al lenguaje y expresiones que utilizan sus personajes en la versión original, ha adaptado la traducción para hacerla lo más parecida posible al original, creando un libro con mucha personalidad.

I think this is the sort of book for which you can get more appreciation on a re-read. For me it was my first encounter with dialect and I did struggled a bit.
P. Djèlí Clark's writing style remains a captivating one for me and I will continue reading his works.

This book has a great premise but I feel as though it wasn’t executed to its full potential. Maybe if the book was longer the author could’ve fleshed out more of the ideas and the reader could’ve connected to the characters more. Also the audiobook is fantastic! If you truly want to engage with this book. LISTEN! TO! IT!
