Finally read this book, it was only ok. I found Wonka to be really creepy, and I wasn't sure if Dahl intended it that way. The story of the Umpa Lumpa was disturbing, and the entire plot made no sense. However, it was a fun story and inspired me to rewatch the original film, not seen since I was a child. I read it aloud to my kids, ages 11 and 14, and they were ambivalent and did NOT appreciate me singing "Um-pa Loom-pa oombadi-dah..." every time a kid was eliminated.

A rare case where the movie is only slightly better than the book.
And the book is really fine.
So the obvious thing to do is see both.

This book was actually quite charming, and I wish I would've grown up reading it. I listened to the audiobook version, and the narrator was fantastic; he added so much personality to the characters that the felt like they were jumping right out of the films. My personal favorite part of the whole book were the Oopma Loompa's songs, so much fun!

willy wonka was much more evil than i remembered him
I loved this story when I was a kid. I don't like it nearly as much as an adult, but I appreciate Dahl's messages against greed, gluttony, and selfishness much better now.
