The world is eminently interesting but I find the ML repellent. I will probably continue to read for the story and hope he redeems himself or more likely I get too frustrated with it.

Phew! What a ride.
This story has the perfect anti-hero!
Nevada was a kick-ass, smart Heroine.

The story takes place in a world that is much like our own except that magic was created? amplified? disseminated? a few hundred years ago. Money and power go to those with the most magical talent.
Not to over-simplify but magic is more like psychic powers, ex. telekinesis and empathy. The world building is actually pretty complex and intriguing. But then IA always writes good intrigue and fantastic action sequences. In some of her earlier books, I felt the action would run on like a summer blockbuster, but in this one, it is character driven and so only as much as is needed to further the plot.

Nevada is 25 and has been supporting her family for years. I loved the family dynamics, especially her tank building grandma!
Her company which was started by her father (died of cancer a few years before) is deeply in debt to a larger company who twists her arm to capture a dangerous fugitive. Adam is good looking, self absorbed and a bad ass. He can melt steel with a glance. He is also a possible cop killer. oh yeah... an maybe a psychopath.
Also out to get Adam is Connor the mass murderer from the last war. A recluse who hasn't been seen in years. A man whose awe-inspiring powers garners respect and fear from most.
There's more to the story, of course, but that's the gist.

Loved it!
Safety is just fine and the violence isn't glorified.
SpoilerI really have no idea of the sexual history of the H. There isn't much sex in this book though so I'm sure more will be revealed in the next. Nevada had a long-term boyfriend whom she broke up with amicably after college.

My one quibble
SpoilerNevada has an annoying tendency to get weak-kneed around Connor, but I didn't feel like he was similarly affected. I do think he is drawn to her strongly. But their attraction just felt a little unbalanced. Maybe Ilona's hubby could write a short from Connor's perspective like he did for Curran? pretty please?
adventurous funny

I enjoy the works of the writing duo, Ilona Andrews, and their approach to urban fantasy, so I'm re-reading the series like a comfort blanket. This is a great intro - the action moves quickly and you learn the magic system and the world through the eyes of the FMC, Nevada. I only had minor knitpicks with how Nevada can sometimes come off as ditzy or younger sounding than she is, in her inner monologues, and she's a little bit of an unreliable narrator given her distrust of magic users. But the story (thankfully) continues...
