I can see what the writer is trying to get across, and I appreciate the message (delivered with some amazing lines). However, for me, the characters weren't explored to the extent that I would have wanted and the plot just went completely wild towards the end. I feel like changes could have been illustrated and enabled by more mundane and realistic scenarios. As I've seen other people say, the ending felt very convenient.

“But books were different. They had lots of blanks. Blanks between words and even between lines. I could squeeze myself in there and sit, or walk, or scribble down my thoughts. It didn’t matter if I had no idea what the words meant. Turning the pages was half the battle.”

“People shut their eyes to a distant tragedy saying there’s nothing they could do, yet they didn’t stand up for one happening nearby either because they’re too terrified. Most people could feel but didn’t act. They said they sympathized, but easily forgot. The way I see it, that was not real. I didn’t want to live like that.”

cabrones no puedo, necesito dibujar algo de este libro porque estoy sintiendo muchas cosas.
There’s no possible way to explain everything that this book made me feel, from the start it felt like someone thrown a punch directly to my throat and then came a strong hug.
As everyone has pointed before, Almond is an amazing exploration of human behavior though the life of two different but equally similar characters, Yunjae (my bby) who can’t feel or understand any emotion and Gon (my other bby) who feels everything way too much but doesn’t know how to express it, and how they encounter life and it’s tragic events, all with their own limitations.
The balance and the chemistry they create is so unique that they manage to dissolve the sadness that lingers within every chapter, I really really loved them.
Even in translation is amazing how I was able to empathize with Yunjae, his narration feels detached but never dull, the non chronological parts were full of emotion, and helped a lot to emphasize the situations he was in.
I’m thankful for the translator and author’s notes at the end, knowing what inspired this and learning about the translation process was insightful and very precious to me.
God what a read!!! THANK YOU RM!!!
