The first and second chapters are very interesting to me. The third chapter was not bad but I think it would be better to lead emotionally for the last chapters but is not the half last it is so fast and nothing too memorable and its just end like that

Absolutely wonderful book about emotions and coming of age when you just don't get them. Two teenage boys, each regularly called 'monster' or 'psycho', one because he senses no emotions because of a misshapen amygdala, the other made violent by a traumatic and loveless childhood, find their way forward slowly, with violence.

Going back and forth between 3 and 4 stars, because most of the book felt right and true in showing how relentlessly hard it is to change, even in small increments. And then the end is such a happy clappy cop out. It was too much of a sudden 'and then all was well' that did not satisfy as much as just detracted from all that came before, with their needs slowly bubbling to the surface and their efforts along the way, often in spite of themselves and always demanding. And with that I mean a practically fairytale ending tying up all loose ends with drastic unrealistic events in the last 10-20 pages. Life's not that kind, as the book itself showed us.

Alexithymia, also called emotional blindness, is a neuropsychological phenomenon characterized by significant challenges in recognizing, expressing, feeling, sourcing, and describing one's emotions. Although the phenomenon isn't classified as a disorder in the DSM 5 it co-occurs with other neurodevelopmental disorders like autism, ADHD, or other specific learning disabilities. The whole book was pretty good until the fairy tale-esque ending with miracles happening one after another, I don't think a child suffering from something similar, watching his grandmother die and mother seriously injured, endure relentless bullying and a near-death experience is gonna survive a stabbing with his friend, as his paralyzed mother suddenly wakes up and everyone gets a neat and well cleaned happy ending.

Really cute tbh.
Read it in one sitting and I think it was the right thing to do, so sweet and the ending was really pretty (although the last part was a bit weird but idk I can live with that)

Je me suis finalement attachée à aucun personnage.
