I don't remember the last time I read something this sad and bittersweet.
It's a dangerous game to talk about mental health issues in books. Here it is done pretty well. I liked the portrayal of emotions and trying to learn them.
The characters were so soft, I just wanted to hug them and tell them that it's okay.
The pov of a kid is not done really well.
Lovely and sad. Sad and lovely. A REALLY GOOD BOOK!

It’s always a clever and effective way of telling a human story through the lens of an “atypical” character, that is, someone who is not yet well-versed in complex human interactions. There are plenty of novels with MCs on the spectrum but this time, it’s a person with Alexithymia, someone who finds it difficult to feel and show emotions like fear or joy.
In a way, a lot of people are still quite immature and seem like they are alexithymic, though really those people just have low EQs, so we are growing with Yunjae in this story, discovering what it means to live, and the importance of human connection. And because Yunjae has a stunted understanding of human relations, his tone is simplistic, and easy to follow.
This was a heartwarming young adult which a lot of teen judges reviewed and for which this novel won accolades in Korea. Coming-of-age stories are always a win in my book.

I had been wanting to read this book for ages, and I actually didn't expect the story to be this light, I truly enjoy reading this and seeing the world through the perspective of Yunjae. even though the first half of the book I kind of feel like it's the calm before the storm (it really was), I didn't really expect the climax to be /that/ extreme, haha. I could have gone on a full rant and complained to my friend who lent the book to me if only I didn't read the last chapter right then and there

dare i say, one of my favourite books????? i loved it so much, from the beginning to the end. i will never forget these 2 characters and i am grateful that such a book exists. i tried to read very slowly to stay longer in the story and i didn’t constantly check how many pages i had left (this is rare for me). but unfortunately i finally came to the end.
an incredible debut.
