Definitely a slow read for some reason. I swear every time I picked this book up, I was asleep within a page. It took me a long time, but I finally finished it. It’s a good story and has likable characters, but I just couldn’t really get into it.
Another sci-fi classic. The writing is dense but entertaining, I love the idea of a hive-minded race of dogs. The story is structured like a regular space adventure, the world felt vast and unexplored (which is fine for the first book in a trilogy). An enjoyable reading experience.

This is the sort of enormously long, epic book that I hate to see end. Not a nail biter in my opinion, but a well-told story with good imagery, great concepts, interesting characters (even for non-science fiction), and really really really great to read over the course of a long vacation. Hooray.
Fantastic concepts, the world building is interesting and unique. So well thought out in certain areas, 30 years later it has some great commentary that absolutely applies today.
Unfortunately, I found the Prologue to be the most interesting part of the novel. Perfect example of someone with fantastic ideas, knowledge and concepts but a lack of interesting prose. I found the characters particularly bland and had a hard time being interested in them.

A wonderful and bizarre story with great characters though a little long winded.
The book was very entertaining from start to finish. The imagination and hard work put forth into the creation of the Tines is so mind-blowing in itself that it alone almost earns the book the 4 stars. A plethora of interesting characters, captivating designs, and hi-tech sci-fi lingo that immerses you into the story is what makes this book so great.
You only need read the first one, the second book is a spin off and the third is a sequel we pretend never happened.
