90 years later yet the problem persists and Orwell's description of back breaking poverty is still relevant.

Definitely an interesting historical read. I liked Orwell's no-nonsense approach to socialism, with the focus on pragmatic ways to grow the movement rather than getting bogged down in ideological squabbles. His is oft-repeated views that "vegetarians and feminists" were driving "ordinary people" away from socialism were obviously silly, and he comes off as an asshole.

The first half of this book is astonishing. It recounts Orwell's visit 'up north', the mines he saw, the people he stayed with, the houses he visited... I found the conditions he described as moving and horrifying and quite alien to my perception of this country. And the misery he is describing really isn't from that long ago. The second half is more of a discussion of the ideas of wealth and class and socialism which were also very interesting but without quite the same impact as the first half. Bits of it sounded totally relevant to today and as if nothing much has changed in the intervening years (sadly!!). Glad to have read it, and it was a lot more readable than what I was expecting so I think I'll be brave enough to try some of his other non-fiction too.
