A great book if you want to learn about the living & working conditions of the ploletariat, class hatred, political intolerance, mechanical development and much more in early 20th century Britain.

This was a school read! A little dense but it was pretty interesting to learn about the systems at the time and the parallels and differences between them then and now, 85 years later. I’m sad to say not much has changed, but then again, we’re back at the same place in the cycle.

I found this pretty interesting. It's half expose of conditions in a coal mining town, half discussion of socialism, and Orwell's thoughts and observations are both surprisingly current and surprisingly funny at times. I didn't agree with everything he said, but it gave me a lot to think about.

Very interesting account of the working class in Yorkshire and Lancashire in the 1930s, lots of focus on miners. Predicts a lot of what happens when fascism takes over in Germany

If you enjoyed Angela’s Ashes, you would probably like this book. Orwell grew up in a lower middle class family and as an adult visited the industrial towns in England in the 1930s. It’s more of a personal narrative than fiction, but it goes into details of the squalor the working and lower class lived in. The miners lives are particularly back breaking filthy work that ended in work place injuries or black lung. Orwell also describes the classism and snobbery that existed during that time period. My mother was born in London in 1930, so it has some personal interest for me. Her parents were immigrants and worked as street vendors.
