Last year I discovered how much I actually enjoyed reading poetry when I really only started because I thought they’d be quick and a way to meet my Goodreads challenge without having to change it. At the beginning of the year, I thought that maybe I would branch out of my usual habit of just reading romance and try poetry out more regularly, but that was not the case. So here we are once again, with me about to embark on my journey of tackling multiple collections of poems to meet my Goodreads goal and I’d like to promise next year will be different and I’ll for sure pick them up more often, but I know myself and it’s just better to not plan on anything. Anyway, I’m happy that I’m back and that the book I picked up first was The Words I Wish I Said! I saw the title and cover and was instantly intrigued and I ended up really loving it!
I didn’t realize at first how young Caitlin Kelly was and I was very impressed once I did because she’s already a wonderful writer and I have no doubts she’ll only improve the more she writes. I was truly able to connect to the words she wrote, I definitely highlighted more than a few of her poems because they spoke to me so much and I wanted to remember them. I was able to relate at some points and Caitlin really broke my heart and made it ache at others. It was a fantastic first read from her and I will absolutely pick her up again!

This book wasn't what I expected to be. Although, there are some good poems in here. Some I relate to a lot. Not bad for a 16 year old writing it. I appreciate the author letting us into her life a bit. I think these are more like quick journal entries than poetry to me. I think the good thing about poetry is it's defined differently for everyone.

I have a 2 star because I think it’s a good self-reflective journal/poetry for a teenager! I was expecting more, and the theme was as unoriginal to me, but again, good for a teen who is reading to relate or feel heard.
