I read it in anticipation of reading James and I’m glad I did. There are parts of the book where the dialect makes reading it a bit challenging, but it gets easier.
The last 50-ish pages were a slog for me and the tone of the novel shifted in a disappointing way.

One of the best parts of being a parent, and a librarian, is sharing your favorite books with your kids. This week I had the privilege of listening to The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn in the car on a Spring Break Road trip to New Orleans with my son. He had read Tom Sawyer in school this semester, so the timing seemed perfect. We both thoroughly enjoyed Huck Finn and laughed over how Huck's way of talking crept into our own speech and thinking after awhile. Riding a riverboat up the mighty Miss'ssip was all the more interesting because we could imagine Huck and Jim on their raft in the still water at the river's edge. This remains one of my favorite books and American writing we can all be proud of.
Great book! My only dislike is about 50 pages from the end Tom Sawyer shows up. Then it got tedious to finish because he is super annoying and makes Jim's escape more complicated than it needed to be.
