It was good, but I was a little lost in the beginning and as soon as I really figured out what was going on the book was just about over.

More of a 3.5. Every time I have to read this book on a time constraint, it gets worse. I really need to read it at my own speed, but for now the rating will stay.

I read this in high school and am glad I revisited it as an adult because it turns out I didn’t remember much, other than the classroom discussion of the book’s use of the n word before we actually dove into it. It was very whimsical and funny. Huck is a very go with the flow guy, and the adventures he went on were at times seemingly absurd but seeing as how it’s a satire it was fitting.

The description of Huck Finn being engaged in a battle between “a sound heart and a deformed conscience” is spot on. It’s beneficial to be able to reflect on how much American society has grown in how we as a people think and talk about black people and also see how much more progress is to be made. Our sense of right and wrong is instilled into us by the world we live in growing up, and seeing Huck’s inner turmoil in crossing the boundaries laid out for him is a reminder that sometimes our conscience is wrong.
