After reading "James" by Percival Everett, I couldn't recall whether I'd ever actually read this book and thought it might be fun to see how close to the original story "James" followed.

It stayed pretty true for the first bit but diverged quite a bit by the end. I can see why, since Jim spends most of the end of the original story shut up in a cabin under lock and key.

But it any case it was interesting to see what the newer book was based on. And the original story had quite a few shifts in tone that I was not expecting. (That ending with Tom meeting back up with Huck was so over-the-top ridiculous. 😂)

My re-read didn't quite live up to my first experience. The satire still landed, but the rampant racism made it harder to enjoy. Only picked it up again because of its connection to Percival Everett's James.

In the eleventh grade I hated this.

Now that I am teaching to eleventh graders ... I kind of love it.

Incredible writing!
