Not sure how I made it this far without reading Huckleberry Finn, but I finally did in preparation to read James by Percival Everett. The first 2/3 was better than I expected. Funny storytelling and Huck’s struggle to figure out the world is endearing. But the ending is 1) unbelievable coincidence and 2) inhumane to Jim.

The narrative depends on an antebellum small town Southern society run by well-meaning Protestant ministers and upstanding judges, spinsters with compassion and Aunts who just exude pie and warmth and forgiveness. The contradictions are staggering - starting with the fact that I finished the book on the eve of Juneteenth. Talk about not letting people know they are in fact legally free from bondage.
