4.5 Excellent. I wanted to know more about his life and his fight for freedoms for Black Americans. Amazing life, tragically cut short.

A very thorough look at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life. I recommend reading this book!

I first encountered Jonathan Eig when I received a copy of his book on Mohammed Ali. The author has the ability to not only capture the essence of these famous Black leaders, but to also capture the energy and language of the time they lived in. He brings Martin Luther King’s strong oratory style to life as well as the anger and desperation of the civil rights movement.

A comprehensive account of King's life, public and private, and his activism. Not a lot of this was new to me, as I have read a couple of King's own books and studied his teachings and life in other contexts. The best parts were the interviews, quotes from King himself, and characterizations of him by the author and those who knew him best. There was a fair amount of chronological plot dump which didn't always hold my attention, and I wanted to know more about the aftermath of his death, but the book just ends there.

I didn't know much about MLK before reading this - just the usual things you learn in school. This was a really compelling book, and I finished it with even more admiration for King, in spite of his flaws. His wife was also one heck of a person! As for Kennedy, and LBJ, what a couple of cowards. And Hoover!!!! What an absolute SOB.
