(Audiobook) Political leader memoirs can sometimes be boring because the author gets sidetracked and carried away describing political moments/atmosphere, but in this book those moments only made me curious to learn more (I somehow didn’t know Hoover was well liked by the public or that the Vietnam War was initially popular with voters!). I liked the insight Eig gleaned from listening to all of the FBI tapes (so many tapes!) and I appreciated learning about MLK as a human and not just as a figurehead for the civil rights movement — and like Eig mentions in the prologue and in his afterword interview, not everything I learned was positive (the plagiarism and girlfriends surprised me).
Moving, and honest recounting of the life of ML King, showing his values, beliefs, doubts, weaknesses, frustrations, moments (and periods) of despair, joys, and more, all while the FBI, with active participation of Kennedy and then Johnson, struggled to control him, and, in the end, tried to bring him down. Amazing life.

MLK is another historical figure I wanted to do a deep dive on and this was a fantastic listen accomplishing that. From humble beginnings to an untimely end and everything in between, def recommend for anyone wanting to learn more. The author mentions some documents that are still under wraps until 2027 so it will be interesting to see what those add to our understanding of MLK in time.
