What a book! I am so moved by all that it took to write this. I felt like we were friends.

A straightforward, traditional biography format but crafted at an elite level

As we went into Black History Month, I knew I wanted to dig a little deeper into Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Junior.  I figured you can’t go wrong with a Pulitzer Prize winner, and that instinct was spot on.  I learned so much about MLK Jr, his contemporaries, and the civil rights movement.  This biography is presented in an astonishingly (and somewhat compulsively) compelling narrative.  Strong recommend.

Wow! What a read. I started this book with no expectations and hoping it wouldn't just be a retelling of information I'd already learned about MLK. Thoroughly researched and based on interviews with people that knew MLK intimately, this book is a well-written gem. It was very interesting to get a sense of who he was and how he felt about himself among close confidants and family. MLK really personifies accepting a call early in life and the fate that goes along with that call. This book really revealed to me that his work was so much more nuanced beyond his work in the South and the March in Washington. And that he was a deeply exhausted because of that work. What a life and what a guide for current times.

This truly an amazing book that should be taught/read in schools.

“…if we embrace the complicated King, the flawed King, the human King, the radical King…if we see and hear him clearly. “ epilogue p. 557

These words describe exactly what you will encounter if you read this book. It’s the only one that I’m aware of that shows King the man. A man who in spite of his flaws, accepted the calling he was given because he truly believed that right was right and that America needed to be reminded of it. Excellent book!
