This biography shocked, angered and amazed me. Eig did an incredible job depicting King as more than a hero and a symbol but also as a deeply-flawed, and emotionally-troubled man, an unfaithful husband and misogynist, an unfairly vilified and targeted individual, a largely misunderstood moral radical, and an all-around, full-fledged person. King was both a man of and ahead of his times. To read of his life, his convictions, his, at times, contradictory actions is to better understand the movement he was part of and the issues that are just as relevant today. Great book that makes me hungry to read more on the topic.
So good. I learned a lot about MLK that I didn't know. This book really brings alive that time period. I definitely recommend on audio.
This book provides a deeper, fuller, and robust understanding of who Rev. Dr. MLK was. There is such a surface understanding of this man, and this book helps unpack his life so that we can know why his actions were so important.
The audiobook is a wonderful way to digest this book as the narrator keeps the listener engaged throughout.

I was determined to finish this book before the end of the year, and I’m so glad I did. I learned so much about MLK, the civil rights movement, the war in Vietnam and so many other things. although it’s long, it really does have a storytelling quality that makes it easier to read than I thought it would be. Short chapters help with that too.
What a wonderfully interesting read. So many things I had no idea had happened. Absolutely recommend this for anyone who only knows the basic storyline from school.

A fantastic book with a great narrative. One of things I appreciated most is how many people behind the scenes pushed the work forward. King could not do it alone, although, he was often the lonely face of it. King, his family and colleagues were absolutely some of the most resilient people facing enormous, systemic racism against people who despised their existence (unless it was on their terms). I feel sick of how people treated other people. I know we still have work and we would like to ignore it, but let this book be an inspiration to step up and call out racism when you see it. Coretta Scott King is a hero and let’s be honest, she probably felt like a single parent before King was assassinated.

King: A Life humanized Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. He lived an extraordinary life. His impact was tremendous and felt by many, and I learned the same facts about him in school. He was iconized and placed on a pedestal (rightfully so). Hearing about him in a less icon-forward way, the good, the bad, and the room for improvement was fascinating. The scope, breadth, and storytelling of this book and how it leaned into using research to form the story shed light on aspects of his life, his family's life, and his peers' lives. I will reread this book. I would love to talk to others who have read and digest this book together.
