I started off enjoying it until it turned into bogus Hollywood BS that’s so overdone and not tethered in reality.

Summary: after sadie’s sister-in-law dies (suicide) she moved into the late sisters house (with her husband and 2 sons, young teen and youth) that was left to them. they also get custody of a 16yo teenager (husbands niece)

It’s supposed to be a fresh start for the family too, after the wife almost lost her medical license due to malpractice, one son was kicked out of school, and hubby had an affair. (As the story progresses, you learn details of the affair, the school incident, and the mishap in the OR).

Shortly after their arrival, however, the niece seems “off” and might be secretly tormenting Sadie... and then the neighbor is murdered. Sadie becomes obsessed trying to find out what happened, esp since she thinks it could be her teen son or niece in law. Except the more she looks the more it looks like she did it. It doesn’t help that she blacks out and forgets things.

Most of the story is told from Sadie, but there are also chapter from the mistress, who has a very single white female thing going on. There are also other chapters told by a 6yo girl named mouse who is subject to abuse by her step mom. Since the neighbor was a step mom to a young girl, you’re left wondering if mouse is the neighbor child and if that will explain the murder.

The resolution is some serious Hollywood BS that’s totally annoying and unsatisfying. It’s been overdone in some 90s / 00s movies plenty

Sadie is an unreliable narrator and has memory lapses. I definitely thought about Sadie having multiple alters prior to the reveal of DID. The "shocking twist" was predictable. It was a bit farfetched to me that Sadie is a practicing physician, yet has these "blackouts," is ignorant to her own medical history, and cannot manage her own medications. This book was twisty and kept me thinking on my toes. At some point throughout the book, I think I suspected everyone as a murder suspect.

I really enjoyed this multi-perspective book and though I found myself trying to figure out what was going on, it didn't overtake my mind and even though I figured out a small part, it wasn't enough to ruin any part of it and there was still much more revealed that I didn't see coming. I've found myself thinking about it since finishing.
