adventurous challenging dark emotional mysterious tense medium-paced

Good book that was face paced and kept me engaged the whole time, I got a little lost at the way the systems work with Will at some points, but a very good ending with the twist at the end and excited to read the next when it comes out

I am between a 4.75 and 5, so I will leave it here. The book itself is a 5-star, but since I only really cared about Vis and Callidus, had issues with Emissa, and found the ending a little confusing, it's 4.75 for now.

Explanation of my issues with Emissa
Knew Emissa was up to something (and was happy about it because it is interesting), and while I see how some may think she didn't mean to hurt Vis, I think it's more interesting for her to be an antagonist moving forward. She obviously knows more than she lets on, and both Vis and the reader were warned multiple times that she is not to be trusted. There is no doubt in my mind that she was sent to the stables and told to get close and silence Vis by either her father or Principalis Veridius. On top of all of this, I do not think her character is fleshed out very much; she's only seen as "nice", "pretty", and "smart". She doesn't make any mistakes (the lagoon doesn't count). This is clear when you compare her to Aequa, who is a much more robust character.

this was dense and huge! But such a cool world building and story I easy to follow through. I have so many questions and so much I feel like I didn’t really get a good grasp on but I powered through this especially once he made it to the academy. Ended up so much more emotional than I expected. Super enticing and I’m peeved the next book isn’t released yet.

(4.5) Wow. Just wow. The ending of this book left me stunned, but that’s all I will say to avoid any spoilers. I am not going to lie, this book took me a minute to get into it. That’s the only reason it’s not five stars. There was a ton of world building that happened at the beginning, which was absolutely necessary, but it was hard for me to become invested right off the bat.

But once I did? Man, this book really hooks you in. The characters, the world, the plot; it was so amazing and well thought out. I cannot wait for the next book, and I cannot wait to see where this goes next. It has been a while since I’ve had a series where the story is so unpredictable (in a good way). There are so many directions this could go, and it makes me excited to read more. Highly, highly recommend this book for anyone who appreciates a complex fantasy world with well developed characters and a good plot to top it all off!
