I'm what most people would probably categorize as a creationist, so I might not be the typical audience for this book. In my home, however, we believe God is not the opposite of science but the inventor and director of science, and that evolution and creation are not necessarily mutually exclusive. So I was quite open to the idea of learning more. Of course I didn't vibe with the author's opinion that God is fictional, on which topic I would use Harari's own words from a later chapter: "Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence."

Other than that I liked the book quite a lot. I found it very informative and extremely fascinating! I learned a lot of fun facts (and a few less fun ones) about our early ancestors that I never knew before. I learned some things about several other species of both humans and animals that I'd never even heard of. (Giant sloths, anyone?) Harari's original Sapiens book was one I wasn't sure I wanted to take on, but in graphic format it was accessible and fun to read.

Content notes: Illustrated nudity, frequent mention of sexual reproduction, a couple of mild swears, adults depicted drinking alcohol, controversial theories about human origins, religion, and early family structure.

Sapiens is one of the best books I have ever read in my life. It is a fantastic, thorough, inspiring, and thought-provoking book that has had me thinking about the history of my species since I first read it a couple of years ago. As a big comic book fan, I was very excited to see a graphic adaptation of this book.

And it does it fantastically, the main ideas in Sapiens are shown and explained in a very accessible and creative way. Especially through analogies such as superheroes and televised contests. It has plenty of humor that makes reading about human history an engaging adventure that anyone will learn from. If you haven’t read Sapiens or are looking for a fresh take on that book, I highly recommend checking this out. I can’t wait to read the second volume.

Final Score: 92/100

Excellent read and graphics to gain perspective on the origin of humankind. Extremely interesting for all age groups.

Lovely illustrations.

Sapiens the book is quite accessible, but the graphic novel has the same content, albeit spread over multiple volumes.

It was a nice way to review the ideas without rereading Sapiens, but Harari’s ideas don’t have the same oomph on a second pass.

Temas complexos são apresentados de forma engraçada. Interessante e muito acessível.
