This was a sweet romance with a friend group that I absolutely loved. The way everyone was there for Evie gave me the feels. I fell for each of the Pleasant Brothers and their love of their family and animals. Already pre-ordered the next book in the series.

I thoroughly enjoyed this! Great characters, terrific premise, and a fun setting. The chemistry between the two main characters was fantastic. I can't wait to read more stories starring members of the Pleasant family! (Language, sex)

the smut in this book was just not okay-alexis already knows as i was completely horrified while reading it. i didn't like the whole amnesia trope because it made the main character kind of boring, and the relationship between her and the love interest felt fake. i did however really like the setting and was not opposed to the whole cowboy thing. the pleasant family dynamic was so cute and i also just liked the whole cast of characters. overall better than i was expecting :)

It was ok. The pacing was too slow for me and the ending felt rushed. I'd read the next one if it's about Zach's brother.

Successful black culinary star and multi-generational cowboy couple up? Not a typical read for me but the one thing @theblackromancebookclub will do is expose you to new ideas. Evie returns to the home she’s avoided for years to heal in secret. Suffering from memory loss, she’s looking to lay low and hopes the familiar place will help her remember. Reconnecting with Zach, one of the hunky Pleasant brothers, is a slow and steady diversion. My rating simply reflects the story’s pace PLEASE understand that I absolutely LOVE this series and it’s characters. READ THIS BOOK!!!!!

DID NOT FINISH

Not sure how I missed that this was an amnesia book. Likely I saw that it was by Rebekah Weatherspoon who I LOVE and didn't actually read the cover copy. Anyways, not the book for me.

So, tell me again that I don’t like amnesia as a plot line (or cowboy stories), because this is so good and just goes to show in the right hands anything can make a great romance*. I’ve read a couple of Rebekah Weatherspoon’s other books and this has all the relatable characters and interesting plot that the others do, but with less on the page bedtime action. The chemistry between the leads is still as good, and it is in no way closed door – but it’s not as blush inducing as Xeni was. I was a bit concerned about how Zach and Evie’s relationship could be resolved if (well when) her memory came back because there seemed to be a couple of unresolvable things there – as I was concerned that one or other of them would have to become less (or give up their dreams) to make it work but actually, it was really cleverly worked out and fit in with both characters.

This is great fun and made great escapist reading at these difficult times. Your mileage may vary, but a ranch in California is sufficiently different to my every day life that I wasn’t constantly worrying about social distancing or viruses the way I am everytime I try and read something set in the contemporary UK at the moment! It’s also the first in a series – because luckily for us, Zach has brothers (and one of them is a pro-sports player, so they may not all be cowboy romances). The next one is out in the autumn and I’m hoping it’s about Jesse, but there’s no blurb for it on Goodreads yet.

Rebekah Weatherspoon kicks off her Cowboys of California series with a challenging trope – the Amnesiac Lover. The Amnesiac Lover has one member of the pair unable to remember who they are or some aspect of their identity which opens the door for a romance that would not otherwise occur. It’s a problematic trope, because so much of who we are is formed by our experiences. Even though I knew she would do it well, I was still anxious about how she would pull it off. I received A Cowboy to Remember from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Romance novels are about the journey. We know that the destination will be at the very least a happily for now. How the reader gets there then is the point of the story. How do these two or more people come together and decide to partner up, and what does that look like in our contemporary world? How do two people build a romantic relationship when one of them has amnesia?

Yvonne “Evie” Buchanan has not talked to childhood friend Zach Pleasant in 10 years, not since the night after her grandmother’s funeral when he refused to admit he loved her. A decade later, she is a celebrity chef and a co-host one a popular new daytime talk show. At a holiday party, she is found unconscious in a stairwell. She wakes up in the hospital with no memory of her life, or any of the people around her. Evie returns to her childhood home in Charming California to recuperate and, she hopes, recover her memory. Though she doesn’t remember Zach, he’s the person she connects with the most. Weatherspoon navigates tricky waters making sure that we know Zach is not taking advantage of a vulnerable woman by focusing on Evie’s agency. Zach makes sure she knows that he was at fault for the estrangement between them and puts her firmly in charge of where their relationship goes. I, personally, would have liked to see a few more pages of grovelling.

I’m certainly not advocating head injuries as a way to solve life’s problems. Evie’s fictional head injury/amnesia gives her a clean(ish) slate from which to reset her life. She’s able to connect with people who were important to her, connect with her family legacy, and connect to her love of cooking without the baggage that a decade of life will give you. Evie gets to know and value herself without her worth being tied up in her work. Her clean slate is temporary. But when her memory does return she still has those connections and she’s able to move forward with clarity and support. Evie’s amnesia serves two purposes in her relationship with Zach – it let’s her get to know him as an adult, and it gives him the extremely hard kick in the pants he needed to recognize how much he has always loved Evie.

A Cowboy to Remember is a lovely romance. Weatherspoon has turned down the heat (which may disappoint some people and make her more accessible to others), but it has a good dose of pining and emotional connection. I loved Miss Leona and hope there is a lot more of the matriarch in subsequent books.
