I wasn't looking forward to this book. Honestly, Sal was a bit of a forgetful character. She was weak and easily manipulated for the other novels. The other characters really drove the book and I expected much of the same in this finale. Mira decided to charge Sal's character with more backbone and I wish it was done as a development in book 1 so that the subsequent novels would show more development rather than stuffing it in the last one. I do think this was a good finish all round for the series tho.

I don't know I liked this series. It really made me think. I liked that it made me this especially this last one. It made me consider what really makes a person and how we label what we know and fear what we don't know. I think that goes on today in non-tape worm examples. However it is not 5 stars, it was very good just not amazing.

Not quite as good as the Newsflesh series. I found this to be annoyingly repetitive in some places - how many times per book do I really need to read about why Sal is afraid of cars? But I'm glad I read it!

I just... Well... Fuck that was amazing!
I'm not really sure where to start. Everything from the premise of "genetically modified for medical and health use tapeworms" to the inclusiveness of the characters. One of the "villains" (and I air quote that because he didn't think of himself as a villain) is a bisexual chimera (human-tapeworm hybrid) and he claims he is bisexual because he had no gender as a tapeworm so there's no reason to limit himself as a human.
I absolutely adored the use of a children's book as an almost holy book throughout the series. "Don't Go Out Alone" by Simone Kimberley does not exist in the real world, but I need Mira Grant to create this book in its entirety (preferably with illustrations, but without is fine, too) and get that published for us. It will be incredible, I'm sure!

The broken doors are hidden in the blood and in the bone.
My darling child, be careful now, and don’t go out alone.

A large part of this book is about family, those we are born with and those we make for ourselves. I teared up at the gestures of the most unlikely character towards the end. In times of hardship everyone must make hard decisions and it’s one of those books that looks at the things from the perspective of an intruder. In the eyes of humans, Sal and her ilk are the enemy.
I did find it unnecessarily repetitive in places. A little recap at the start is fine, but do we really need it repeatedly explained to us that tapeworms don’t like teeth and therefore are uncomfortable with people grinning? I enjoyed it but I think the editing could have been tighter, and therefore the book would have had more momentum.
