It's actually not as good as the rest of the series, but Cherry Jones is a divine narrator and my 9 month old grandson loved listening to the book on walks today!

Man, they went through some hard things during their first four years...it made me really sad to hear about such hard times. I do feel like as a whole the book wasn't complete. I know this book was published posthumously, but I really wish she would have finished it! I feel like I'm in the same boat as some people where I don't accept this as the last book in the series. ROFL. Overall, though. I'm glad I finished the series.

Book 31 “Little House in the Big Woods”
32 “Farmer Boy”
33 “Little House on the Prairie”
34 “On the Banks of Plum Creek”
35 “By the Shores of Silver Lake”
36 “The Long Winter”
37 “Little Town on the Prairie”
38 “These Happy Golden Years”
39 “The First Four Years”
40 “On the Way Home” of 2022 by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Rose Wilder Lane
I read these books as a child. I am so glad I have reread them now. As an adult and mother, I am able to appreciate Laura differently. I found myself enjoying her character (with ups and downs) more as a young child than after her sister Mary became blind. After this event, Laura becomes solely focused on doing everything to help Mary in some way. I find myself sad that I don’t find Laura wanting to do anything for herself, but constantly focusing on Mary, and later Almanzo, and finally Rose.

I was very excited when I picked up this book to read, but I found it quite disappointing. I love all of Laura's other books, but this one didn't have her usual charm. I suppose that's because she didn't finish it completely before she died. It started before Those Happy Golden Years left off, and it controdicted some of the details from the latter; I perceived it that Laura wasn't happy with her marriage like she had been in Those Happy Golden Years. I don't recommend this unless you want to spoil the happy feeling you get from the end of Thoes Happy Golden Years. Otherwise, it is a well written book, a classic.

What a difficult life on the prarie! Those were hard hard years!
Far from as good as the rest. Unsurprising since this was just a draft/outline, not intended to be published as is. What a rough four years!
This is the end of the Little House series. I have to say I was a bit disappointed. This was published posthumously and I don’t think this is the story that LIW would have wanted to tell. She’s now married to Almanzo and living as a farmer’s wife on the prairie. All of the love of the prairie is gone – she’s focused on paying the bills and keeping house. Of course, she’s an adult and a parent now, so it makes sense that her perspective has changed, but I don’t think Laura would have wanted to lose the spark of the prairie. I’m glad I got to read it, but it’s certainly not going down as a favorite in the series.
