Third in the Sianim fantasy series of very loosely connected stories.

My Take
Wow. Patricia Briggs has done it again. This story has all the homeyness and personality I have found in her other series. I've fallen in love with Sham and Kerim and am desperately hoping that Briggs will consider another installment.

The only connection any of the books have is the countries involved and the ae'Magi although the Voice of Altis does get a mention in When Demons Walks.

When Demons Walk, does not answer any of the questions raised in Steal the Dragon, 2, although...the instructions sent out by the Voice of Altis in When Demons Walk would seem to support a positive outcome.

The Story
To survive, Sham has spent most of her young life stealing from Southwood's nobility. Now, as the city's nobles fall prey to a killer, Sham is called on to help, and must use all of her magical wisdom to send the demon away.

The Characters
Sham is a young thief, mistress, lady, and sorceress whose skills will be called upon.

Southwood is…
…a country plagued by demons.

Cybelle is…
…where the Voice of Altis is the current ruler.

Set in the Sianim world, only loosely connected to the others, but pretty good for a Briggs fix.

When Demons Walk is book three in the Sianim series by Patricia Briggs and Narrated by Jennifer James Bradshaw.

This novel reads as a stand-alone. You don’t have to read in order.

When Demons Walk is a captivating novel. The intrigue and mystery were magical.

Sham, was the daughter of the head of the king's guard and an apprentice magician before the magic hating Cybellians besieged the castle and killed her entire family along with many others. I very much enjoyed Sham as a character. I like how resilient and capable she is. I also loved how she pulled off her different identities and played the roles she needed to play in order to fool those around her and discover who the demon is.

Her life takes a turn after her mentor is killed and revenge on those that hurt him in the past is put on hold. Kerim, the warlord keeper of the castle needs her help. He doesn’t believe in magic and thinks that Sham is just a clever thief, but he’s open-minded and needs her help to find out who’s killing nobles in the castle.

The romance between Kerim and Sham is slow to bloom and is left unfinished at the end. Both are clearly falling for each other, but all we get is a kiss in the end. Briggs doesn’t focus on the romance. She’s more on the world building and having the romance be a slow burn. I feel like this might be the intended path, but since this is her earlier work and it never took off, then we won’t get the completion in this area.

There are a few threads left unfinished in the Sianim series. I’ve read the four books in the this series and I can say that the series isn’t complete, but still a very fun and enjoyable fantasy series to listen too.

Narration: Jennifer James Bradshaw did a fabulous job narrating. The audio was mesmerizing and well done. I was pulled in until the very end. I loved the mystery and learning about each character. I recommend the audio.

You know when you are really enjoying a book when you binge read the entire thing instead of studying for an exam.

This one was fun, light, and made me wish it there were more books. This one is a stand alone. Yes it connects to Dragon, but it takes place years after it. In another part of the world and with other characters.

Sham is a thief who gets asked to help when people are dying left and right. She is also a sorceress and knows a demon is loose. Her country has been taken over by invaders and now she must help them. Tricky. Not to mention I kept hoping she and Kerim would hook up.

She pretends to be a mistress (quite good at it), she hunts for a demon. We get the understand a bit what has happened and then it ends. Sad sad day. Yes the story ends, no loose threads. But what happens then to everyone? I feel like Briggs needs to finish the UF books I love, and then write another Sianim story too.

I do enjoy authors who write several different series and each one is unique. Patricia Briggs is one of those authors.
Sham lives in a world where magic exists, but not everyone believes in it. Sham does since she is both a thief and a sorceress. Her land was taken from her people and she is doing what she can to take it back where she can from the nobility.
A killer is running amok and killing the nobility. There seems to be a pattern, but she can't quite see it.
The Reeve of the land asks her for her help, so she poses as his mistress to help. He is one of those who doesn't believe in magic, so when she tells him it's a demon doing the killing....
Sham is street smart, so she can get the job done. She just has to keep from being tempted to do what she's been doing with her stealing from the rich.
This is number 4 in the series, but I didn't feel like I'd missed anything by not reading the first three in the series. But I am now intrigued enough to go looking for them.
A very neat mixture of a mystery, fantasy, and a wee bit of romance.
Highly recommendable.

I'm confused about how the books in this series connect to each other... They are not bad, but too disjointed to really get into.

Very good book, typically one of those books that left me a taste of moreish when I finished it! There could have been so much more to be told in this story :)

Cardboard characters. Cardboard situation. Random people introduced for no particular purpose... "The Shark"--What purpose did this man serve, other to than to provide the heroine with some easy "hidden" information, and to carry the colorful name?

Never has demon possession been so tame, never has the demon's purpose been so...anticlimactic. Never has magic evoked such little wonder. Never has a curse that slowly warps a man's body to cripple him been so... boring.

Her later writings are SO much better.
