Cardboard characters. Cardboard situation. Random people introduced for no particular purpose... "The Shark"--What purpose did this man serve, other to than to provide the heroine with some easy "hidden" information, and to carry the colorful name?

Never has demon possession been so tame, never has the demon's purpose been so...anticlimactic. Never has magic evoked such little wonder. Never has a curse that slowly warps a man's body to cripple him been so... boring.

Her later writings are SO much better.

One of Briggs's earlier books, and perhaps not as sure-handed as her later ones. Still very enjoyable, though.

This was another amazing book, I loved what it added to the world, and I can't wait to finish out this series!

3.5 stars for the chemistry between Sham and Kerim.

I forgot which order the books were in and read this one first. Happily, I didn't feel as though the story suffered much from my lack of knowledge of what's happened already.

This series (inclusive of the Aralorn) is Briggs' earlier work and it kind of shows - the turn of phrases and some dialogue were a little awkward, but I've read worse. What hasn't changed though is her compelling story lines and characters and great world building.

The chemistry between Sham and Kerim was a lot of fun to read
Spoiler(especially when she pretended to be his mistress)
Spoiler.

The 3rd book by Briggs set in this particular world, it's ok. I think I would have enjoyed this more if I hadn't read the 2nd book in the series. This book introduces a completely new set of characters, which would be ok, but it references large-scale events from the previous book...but doesn't really address what had happened from book 2 to book 3. Since book 2's plot pretty much revolved around this event (the gathering of information about an impending war & the identity of the enemy's army), it seemed really odd to have skipped completely to the end of the war, and fast forwarded several years beyond it. The fact that it was also about the typical street-wise girl getting the young prince didn't excite me. IF you're already a fan of Briggs & IF you don't really have much else to read, then pick this one up. It won't piss you off to have read it.

A re-read.

Patricia Briggs is an excellent writer. The story of Sham is fun to read, full of magic, tension, and surprises.

3 1/2 good, sometime quite good.
These earlier works of Patricia Briggs definitely are good but not great. The last one I liked the best so far. At times they go off to explanations and not showing, or too much complication. Still the fantasy is good to really good and this I would have bumped up to 4 again except that the ending was just too abrupt for me. We have the climatic action scene where everything is resolved/solved and then bam decision and ending. Also, I didn't feel like I really knew anyone well but the 2 main characters. The other characters are just a little flat. So the story was engaging and it was good, and at times it was really good, but not the majority of the time and the ending really decided it for me.

Wow!
This tale lends itself perfectly to being read aloud. It harkens back to when people sat around fires and told stories late into the night.

The narrator is PERFECT. She has the accents and intonation down pat. She makes you feel like you are with the characters.

The characters and plot are engaging. So that even if you figure out the salient points, instead of boredom you feel like a repeat of a favorite movie.

There is a little violence. No steam, although sex is mentioned. It is mostly adult themes that might be an issue for some teen readers.

I highly recommend this book to everyone. It is definitely one of my favorites!

I listened to this book using Chirpbooks.com.
