Listened to the audiobook as read by Angus King. Excellent breadth of historic research on the topic of wolves in Britain, and Gow's firsthand anecdotes about wolves in more recent decades were fascinating.

"Hunt for the Shadow Wolf" by Derek Gow was not what I was expecting. I love wolves and there were way too many descriptions of wolves being tortured and gruesomely killed in this book for my taste.
I overall loved the concept, and learning all the little tidbits of wolf folklore and history, but man, I really didn't need to know all the horrifying ways that humans through the centuries have concocted to hurt and kill one of my favourite animals!

Only one chapter is devoted to the current status of wolves in Europe and the discussion of returning to Britain. I feel like this is the most interesting idea which should have been explored, instead the focus is on various cultural remnants of wolves.

I really wanted to like this but it was just…boring. No clear narrative and felt more like I was getting a weird barrage of wolf facts and anecdotes
