Read this a read aloud to my gang and it was okay, but man oh man, I'm pretty sure by the end of the whole class along with myself just wanted it to be done.
4.5 honestly. For a juvenile fiction this book was just solid. Good characters and interesting plot. Easy to read and connect with. Just an enjoyable book.
I wasn't sure what to expect, but I really enjoyed it. I get the Potter comparisons.. haven't read Hunger Games so can't comment on that aspect. I needed a light, fun read and this gave me exactly that. I'm definitely on board for book 2.
Interesting fantasy laced with adolescence struggles and the message that no matter if you are strong, book smart, or creative, every person should be important. The audiobook was a wonderful listen because of the British gentleman reading it. I think McMann did a great job creating strange situations and the Magical Weapons invented, such as "splatter paint", "blinding highlights" and "scatter clips". I was entertained throughout the tale.
Just okay, but I can see why the younger kids like it. My son recommended it to me and I wasn't planning on reading the sequel until he told me about it and now I want to. Maybe he should be the librarian!
Middle school OBOB 2017. First in a series. In a dystopian world devoid of emotion, creative children, the Unwanted, are culled at 13. Unknown to the rear of Quill, they don't die, but are spirited off to a colorful magic land called Artime'. Alex, the main character, has left behind his twin, Aaron, and sparks fly when they meet again in battle. Pretty good, imaginative, but ordinary too.
Very fun, easy, quick read. Well-written, interesting world building. Similar to other magical school type novels yet with a lot of unique elements that made it feel different and fresh. I recommend it.
This is my second full reread of the book (and I'm planning to reread the full series).
The world-building in this series is a really interesting and unique one. I don't think I can make a good review on this book right now as I still remember most of the details from my first read, but I really enjoyed the book nonetheless. One thing that I really enjoy about Lisa McMann's books is the writing style; it's one that I am extremely fond of.
I gave this book a four out of five stars mainly because of the pacing. Some parts seemed to zoom by too quickly while others seemed to be unnecessarily dragged out. That didn't really interfere with my overall point of view of the book, and I would have rather given it a 4.5/5 as opposed to a 4/5.
