Crime and Punishment was an absolute beast of a book to get through—partly because of the many characters with complicated names, partly because of the dense, insightful dialogue, and partly because of the relentless, sometimes repetitive cycles of reasoning and emotion. The novel is a deep exploration of guilt and its devastating effect on the human conscience, while also showing the value of morality and the possibility of redemption through suffering. In some ways, it feels like a warning against over-intellectualism, where excessive rationalization can strip away humanity. I especially enjoyed the psychological games Porfiry Petrovich played with Raskolnikov, gradually tightening the noose through conversation rather than force. The murder story itself was intriguing, confusing, and often overly verbose—it could have been shorter by 200 pages, though perhaps then it would lose some of the haunting psychological insight that gives it its lasting impact. 8.25/10
I was pretty worried about starting this book because it’s categorized as a philosophical/psychological classic. It took me a month to read this book but that’s because last month my schedule was pretty hectic. The first one third of the book was pretty much an introduction to the plot and characters and there was a lot of monologue. The second one third of the book was a drag and hard to get into because it was dominated by sub plot lines. I struggled through this bit and decided to rate the book three stars but the ending: was fantastic. This slow paced book took a surprising turn and turned into a page turner. The dialogue improved and the characters came to life.
I was also shipping Rodya and Sonya. It was not an absorbing story from the start but definitely deserves four stars for the way the story was wrapped up.
