Another Masterpiece

I couldn’t put the book down! I was absorbed into this story like I was in the first book. I can’t wait for the third!

3 ⭐️ man this series started on such a high with book 1 and then this book came and ruined the high. All the character growth that happened in book 1 has now been destroyed and I’m over it. Don’t know if I want to finish the series at all anymore

Book two is even better than book one! I love these characters, and I honestly hope book three ends happy because I'm scared for the Maji. This author knows how to pull out your emotions and empathy <3

Adeyemi's writing is as enjoyable as ever. Her use of language and imagery to create a vivid world full of wonders is almost unparalleled. And again, the narration by Bahni Turpin is completely immersive.

I did find this story to be a little less enjoyable than the first. Perhaps it was because Inan spends much less time interacting with the other main characters (and so the conflict tends to develop at a distance), or because the story was less adventure and more political/military conflict. But those are personal preferences.

I would absolutely recommend this book for anyone who enjoyed the Children of Blood and Bone.

What a phenomenal story! I both love and hate that it ends on such a cliffhanger because all I want is MORE. I genuinely love how real the characters in Adeyemi's works are. They are human beings with real human problems, flaws, and consequences. No one is perfect, not even the protagonists. Mistakes are made, and the characters really grow. Adeyemi makes me care about these characters like they are my own friends. I can picture them so easily in my mind's eye and when they screw up, it hurts me deeply, just as they hurt each other. It's crazy how good her books are.

So, this is the second book in her series based on African mythology. As always, I don’t want to give any spoilers, but this book definitely gave me that typical second movie in a trilogy kind of feel. It had a lot of war, a lot of politics, and a lot of information about the world. And it ended on an excellent cliffhanger. I did struggle in this book as well with a desire to throttle characters who made prideful decisions that could have avoided certain outcomes. Of course, pride does that, but it was done so well in this book. Looking forward to the next one!

I didn't notice a lot of profanity or sexual content. There was a lot of sexual tension but nothing truly explicit. There was a lot of violence because it was literally about a war. Still, the world is beautiful, complex, and fascinating.

It seems odd to write a five star review and say I had to put this book down several times before I finished it. But not because it was bad, because my emotions were so intense. At one point I was so caught up I almost stopped breathing. Cannot recommend enough.
