The rating is for the sequel half of this book. The novelization half of the book is fine, but you could honestly just watch the movie for a better experience.

This book is fanfic. I’m not saying that as a way to slam this because I like fanfic and have enjoyed plenty of published fanfic. But it’s just Next Gen fanfic that lacks the heart the original movie had.

It’s clunky and only worth a read if you’re really craving a Hocus Pocus sequel that isn’t the one that came out on Disney+.

I loved reading the first part which was basically just what you saw in the movie but I don't really care for the second story of this book. It just doesn't feel right.

So good! If you remind yourself that it is written for a younger audience you can look past some of the elementary chapters. Overall a great sequel and interesting twist to a story we all thought we knew so well! Personally I loved it and it’s a great quick Halloween read...can’t wait to see the movie!

The sequel was better than the film version

I enjoyed the first book and the second was so much better than the film Disney made. If the film would have followed this book it would have been worth the wait.

AAAAND I'M DONE. Dnf. Fuck no.
"she could be your isa-bae-lla"
I immediately paused and returned this to the library after that.
Are you fucking kidding me? You waste my time giving a bad actors version of the original movie then you're going to jump into some gag inducing contemporary fan service to try and grab the 13 year olds who don't know this movie? FUCK YOU.
I listened to this on audio and the reading was just awful but it was literally the exact same story as the original movie for the first almost half. Then they're just going to jump into some horrible "Omg snapchat bae why aren't you on insta oo I'm a real photographer because I take pictures of details and don't use insta filters lmfao bae"

So it went like this; read book one and then watched the first film, read the sequel and then watched the second film.

Thank you to my buddy read partner @cicisbooknook for knocking this one out with me in just 2 days! When I say I'm Hocus Pocused out....

The first film and book were a perfect match for each other and my nostalgia peaked. Reading the book and then re-watching the movie made me feel young and old at the same time. I feel like if I had watched as an adult for the first time it wouldn't hit the same way.

Which leads me to the sequel, I loved the book. It was exactly what I needed after the first film, a new story with new characters but seeing pieces of all the ones I cared about from the first. I enjoyed it quite a bit. It was interesting and cheesy and flowed effortlessly from the first. Hocus Pocus 2, the second film, didn't have the same vibes but I didn't hate it. I can see the parts they took from the sequel. I liked the way they went for the build up to the end where I might have teared up. I'm glad that I watched it.

DNF

The story was just so copy and paste to me but with different characters.

You know what they say, the sequels are almost never as good as the originals. And that's true for this book. Now, I don't know anything about how it was written, but it felt rushed. Some sections took forever to get through (I'm pretty sure the time Poppy took from deciding to go to the Sanderson House to the time they actually got there was 4 chapters long, and all they did was walk and talk about whether or not they should go.) I do appreciate that it is a much more diverse book than the original movie, but reading it felt like Disney just wanted to release the book so people would buy it for nostalgia factor (which, fair, that's part of the reason I bought it). I think the write up of the movie was quite good, and gave some further insight into Max's thoughts, but the shift from 3rd person to 1st person when Poppy became the main character was a little jarring. Also, I'm pretty sure sometimes the tenses were mixed up? So some editor didn't really do their job.

In short, this book was fine. It wasn't spectacular, it wasn't horrible. Maybe if I hadn't just read the amazing [b:Cemetery Boys|52339313|Cemetery Boys|Aiden Thomas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1594059624l/52339313._SY75_.jpg|69233016] right before reading this I would've enjoyed it a little more.

It was Meh. I will be keeping it as a collector’s item because of my absolute love for the film.
The book adaptation was brutal, the very definition of ‘tell not show’. Where as I would have loved she make it her own and bring us further into the story, bring some depth to the characters.
The sequel was okay. Just okay. I mean, I don’t know if anyone might have been to reach the level of high regard I have for the book in the first place, to be fair.
Out of curiosity’s sake, however, if she did write a third— as the ending may possibly suggest— I would read it.
