I’m finally finished! This was essentially two books in one, which is partly why it took me so long to finish. The first half was Hocus Pocus - based exactly off the movie. The dialogue, everything was pretty spot on. It was a very nostalgic read for me. The sequel, was good. It wasn’t my favorite story ever, maybe a little too juvenile, but I have to remember that hocus pocus was geared for kids in the first place.
The sequel takes place 25 years later & the protagonist is Poppy, daughter of Max & Allison. Dani is back, too! I only knocked a star off because while the puns were funny at first, there were way too many. Also I felt like some of the things that were signature to the movie, they overplayed too much. For example, Sarah repeating everything three times. It just became slightly annoying. Other than that, it was a cute read & has me wondering if they’ll make a movie out of the sequel? They did leave the book ending open for another one!

A Halloween fun read! Honestly nothing too earth shattering but it was fun to get into the Halloween spirit! Some good nostalgia moments

The first story was fine - it was like reading the movie with a few additions here and there. The sequel read like fan fiction. Having been a fan of this movie since childhood, I was hopeful going in, but ended up disappointed in the new story.
Some small SPOLIERS may be mentioned
I am going to start off by saying Hocus Pocus is just a written out version of the movie. It was a quick read since I know the movie by heart. When it came to the sequel, I had quite a few issues. The story follows Poppy and her two friends navigating high school in Salem, Massachusetts, awaiting Halloween. As we find out, they fear Halloween and do not partake in the yearly celebration.
I liked the author's choice to show a fear of Halloween, following Max and Allison's misadventure with the Sanderson sisters. You will also get to see other original characters from Hocus Pocus. I really did not like the modernized setting. I felt it took away the magic and innocence of the children in Hocus Pocus. The characters and plot seemed juvenile. I believe this could have been better directed for middle school audience, but perhaps the LGBTQIA references were too mature for a younger audience. I skimmed through the book to finish it and am glad I decided to borrow this from my library and not buy a copy. I honestly believe this sequel was unnecessary or should have been released after a movie adaptation was made to test an audience's reaction.

No.
This book...
Part 1 is basically just the movie, and that was great as it pretty much followed the film. Part 2 is where I have issues. Magic system? Sorry, I don't understand it. Good MC? Yeah...no. Rules? HAH WHAT RULES? OUT THE WINDOW! It's honestly such a huge mess. I just can't.
