3.4 AVERAGE

This book is more along 3.5 stars rather than 3 stars. The component that lowers the rating is the first half is the retelling of the movie. You can tell the author is writing down the story of the movie and it doesn't contain the author's style.

However, in the second half of the book the story picks up. You follow Poppy and her friends Travis and Isabella, on Halloween night as they accidentally bring back the Sanderson sisters. The group needs to find a way to send the sisters back where they came from and save the town of Salem. The story had a different feel than the first half where the author wrote the story her way.

I do wish the first half was taken out and we only got the second half. I do believe the book would be rated higher if that was the case

Did not have the witty banter and one-liners of the original. If anything, it felt a bit preachy.

2021 PopSugar Reading List #36

Part One aka the movie we all know and love was decent. Lots of quotes from the movie couldn’t help shouting them out like Bette Midler from the film.

Part Two aka 25 years later was pretty meh couldn’t get involved with the characters, very childish (even for a Disney young adult book) the Sanderson family tree scenario didn’t blow me away and tbh if I wasn’t such a fan of the movie I wouldn’t have bothered.

The Story itself was cute. We have always wanted more. The only reason I have it a four status because I felt as though the story was dragged on. It could have ended sooner than it did.

It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t great. There’s far too much teen romance for my tastes. It certainly shouldn’t have taken me almost 2 week to finish this. If you’re very familiar with the original movie, I suggest skipping the whole first part of the book as it’s just a novelization of the original movie.

A fun, easy read. I absolutely love Hocus Pocus and the first part of the book is essentially word for word the movie novelised so I thoroughly enjoyed it and I could picture the movie in my head whilst reading. The sequel was a fun extra and I appreciated that the characters had more diversity. The sequel did keep me gripped with the high stakes of the witches return and I liked that the original characters were all included by following on with their children. The only minor flaw of the sequel was it felt like it tried too hard to be ‘modern’, I find one of the charms of Hocus Pocus is it stands the test of time and can be enjoyed as much now as it was in the 90s, whereas some of the language and references in the sequel felt like they would be irrelevant in a couple of years and perhaps would lose the essence of the story being timeless. Overall, a very easy read, if you love Hocus Pocus I think you’ll enjoy this book as long as you don’t take it too seriously and dig deep into the nostalgia of the original film.

First book was almost exactly like the movie

Second book I was kind of iffy about but I can't wait to finally watch the. Movie!

I enjoyed both books. The first book was exactly like the movie, but offered some “bonus” details that related to the sequel. The bonus details were actions/descriptions that I wouldn’t have noticed from the movie and helped develop characters.

The sequel was pretty good. Sequels can be tough especially for Disney. The book appropriately continued the Denison’s “luck” with witches, without being too over the top. I wish there was more character development with Mary and Sarah. Mary did have her moment, but I wanted more. The ending was intriguing and I wonder if they will make this a trilogy.

Now that I write this review, I see it says "Hocus Pocus AND The All New Sequel". I wasn't prepared to read the whole first movie before the Sequel Started. lol I did enjoy reading it though. The added changes that lead into new info in the Sequel, were nice added treats to find. It was a cute kookie book. More info about the witches was my favorite part!
