DUN DUN DUN!

Okey here we go...

So part one. Yes. Hello. Here for it. Hocus Pocus is my favorite Halloween movie ever. I have watched it every day this month. So reading part one was amazing because so many things resonated in me that I never picked up on before. There was so much explained that I hadn't realized in my previous 47498137509432 times watching the movie. Also the fact that I've seen the movie that many times, I knew the tone of voices that each character used when speaking their lines and I knew what each scene looked like which made the reading faster.

The ending was slightly different though which I understand for the purpose of part two but also.... y'all can't be changing the greatest film in history...

Now part two:
So I had read previous reviews of other people saying part two sucks. I have to disagree. It was refreshing. I have seen the film so many times and always wondered what a part two would look like. It was so interesting to see the diversity of the characters as well as what my favorite characters from the movie are up to 25 years later. I loved that Allison and Max were together and that Dani appears. Probably my favorite thing about part two is the modernization of everything and that the sisters are so much more clueless to the fact of what things like a cellphone are... I liked various other aspects of the story like the whole search for the special thing that the kids embark on. Or the whole fact that Elizabeth plays a part in this one and the whole bloodline thing happens. We have some special guests that appear too which is cool (trying not to spoil my bad). Also the way certain parts of this is written, had me on the edge of my seat freaking out because I couldn't wait to see what happened.

Now.. As much as I loved a lot of the story line of this book, there were various parts that I didn't love hence 4 stars. Some parts of it seemed a little forced which I didn't appreciate. Also some things didn't make sense or they needed to be explained more. I do believe that because I have watched the movie so many times that the setting was a little bit easier to understand which made the story flow better but there were some times that I really didn't fully understand wtf was going on.

I must say that I did really enjoy this tale. I know others may not have as much as me but I guess I was really rooting for this story. Also I just love the universe that is Salem, Massachusetts. I will most likely read this story every Halloween from now on. Also, might I add that the ending had me SHOOK and I believe was the perfect way to prepare for yet another sequel. :)

Winifred, Mary & Sarah make ANOTHER comeback!

After Max Dennison nearly kills the children of Salem in 1993, 25 years later his daughter Poppy nearly does the same. With a different goal in mind from the Sanderson sisters they wreak havoc on Salem again in hopes of remaining immortal. Only Poppy and her friends can stop the 3 hags again. I thoroughly enjoyed this.

This sequel challenges the adage. “The book is always better than the movie.” It was a big ole volume full of meh.

D. N. F.

I really wish there were a way to make that DNF bigger than it is because HOLY SHIT DID I HATE THIS. To put how hard of a fail this was into perspective, I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Hocus Pocus, I mean I annoyed the hell out of my mom with this movie growing up. Pop up occasionally on tv? Forced her to watch it. Comes on for 13 days of Halloween of ABC Family (now Freeform for you youngsters)? Forced her to watch it. Comes on MULTIPLE times for 13 Days of Halloween? Forced her to watch EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. Even now at the old age of 26, my mom will call me anytime she sees it on tv and let me know so I can watch it. She really is the best. ♥️ I'm sure you get the picture of how much I adore this movie, so imagine the sheer excitement to hear the movie I loved is getting a book!

Y'all, I was ready.

Unfortunately, I was not ready to absolutely H A T E it and have it sit on my shelf for OVER A YEAR mostly read with less than 100 pages left. Part one is just a novelization of the movie that had no magic of the movie, with an added surprise at the very end that completely changed the movie. If anyone knows anything about cult movies, its that you don't mess with the story. While I wasn't too miffed by the change, I was interested to see where it went, enter part two, the story of Max and Allison's kid and her gang going head to head with the sisters. I just...I can't write anything good, I hated the "sequel" the moment I started it.

How did this book end up staying on my shelf for so long, even with my unabashed hatred?

Luck and perhaps me wishing that somehow, someway when I picked it up that I would be able to get into it. However, that never happened and I will do everything I can to wipe this book from my brain.

2.5⭐️rating. Part 1 was fun.

Wanted to like this so badly....but I think I'm too old. I'm too far out of the "YA" range for me to sync with this book, despite growing up with the movie.

The book is split into two parts:
1) THEN - retelling of the Hocus Pocus movie (best part, to me)
2) NOW - sequel set 25 years after the movie with some new and some recurring characters

They did amuse me with the Yoda quote they snuck in there...thanks, Disney-verse continuity...
