Another delightful book in this wonderful cozy mystery series! Lady Georgie is a witty, fun and engaging heroine, and the early 1930s world Rhys Bowen has created is so vivid and real. I loved the glamorous French Riviera setting of this one. Bowen wove real life characters like Coco Chanel, Wallis Simpson, and Georgie's relative Queen Mary into the story seamlessly and brought them all vividly to life, as she did with the fictional characters as well. I especially enjoy the recurring cast in these stories, such as Georgie's friend Belinda (the Samantha Jones of 1933), her Cockney grandfather, and her obnoxious sister-in-law Fig. These books always make me feel like I've watched the most enjoyable BBC mystery series à la Poirot - they have the same sort of interwar glamour and intrigue.

If I have one complaint about this particular installment, it's that there wasn't enough of the dreamy and mysterious Darcy O'Mara! Georgie's on again/off again love interest is one of my favorite characters and I missed having him around for most of the story. I was also a little annoyed at the "big misunderstanding" plotline that kept the two of them apart. It could have been resolved in all of five minutes if they'd just talked to each other instead of Georgie jumping to conclusions. Sigh.

Still, I truly adore this series and enjoyed every page of this book. I'm so glad there are many more of Georgie's adventures to look forward to.

Rhys Bowen's writing style is fantastic--she is part Austen, part Christie, and part Sedaris. Can't get enough of protagonist Georgie!

A fun summer read

My favourite in this series so far, probably because it's got F. Scott Fitgerald vibes and it feels like the one that has been developped the best. I still sort of sensed who did it but I couldn't figure out why this time.

5/15/11: *gasp* She's writing another one! Will Georgie finally be deflowered by Darcy?!?! I don't know how long I can wait to find out!!! :P

9/22/11: Welp, looks like there's going to be another book in this series. For some reason, I have no doubt that we are to be strung along at least until Georgie and Darcy's relationship is, er... consummated. Of course, this consummation could take the form of marriage even; I don't know! Still, I'm not complaining. This series is one of my few guilty pleasures.

(And speaking of Darcy - why was he so absent in this book? I didn't realize how much I liked him till his presence was basically nil.)

This is one of those beach read kind of mysteries. Light weight, amusing, and a bit silly at times, it reminded me of the Mary Steward mysteries that featured young, naive women and exotic locations.. The inclusion of real life characters gave the book an interesting twist.

This series is beyond formulaic. The same protagonist reaching for a different life, who never gets there, but gets to pretend some acuity in the solving of crimes but really never does anything other than stumble on things, literally.
I read these as a way to slow down before sleep, and they work for that.

Fluffy, entertaining, and rather addictive, these mysteries are very character-driven, which I think makes the best kind of story. I've blown through a bunch of them while on vacation. Each is quite similar to the last, but I do feel like I know the characters.

Great story for Lady Georgiana!!! Twists on this one that I didn't see coming. My favorite of the series so far. Anxiously awaiting the next installment.
