Tom Ellen and Lucy Ivison’s Freshmen is a fun tale that lends a genuine, authentic voice to the first year college experience. Those in college will definitely finds things to relate to, while those who have long graduated will feel nostalgic for their university days.
Frehsmen packs of punch of comedy while also diving into deeper issues concerning mental health and problematic relationships. The dialogue is witty and the pop culture references are a nice touch of fun. The ending was little sad, but also extremely realistic, so kudos to the authors on that one.
Overall, this is a really great read, perfect for new freshmen to dive into the summer before starting college.

this is really what college was like. I loved all of it honestly.

I picked this book up for 'research' as I am about to be a fresher myself and because finding YA/new adult books set as UK universities is actually pretty hard.
For me, this book pretty much hit all my expectations. Freshers is a good rom-com and the uni setting makes it that extra bit chaotic and exciting. The thing that stood out to me was the female friendships from Pheobe's POV, Negin and Frankie are basically the best Freshers friends you could ask for and, honestly, the highlight of the novel. I also liked the exploration of sexism, fitting in and romantic relationships. Luke and Pheobe are pretty well-developed and the side characters are quirky and fun.
The pace of the plot is good, there are some laugh-out-loud moments and some more serious moments. Overall, this book was a fun, fast read and satisfied my need for UKYA lit. I would recommend this to anyone who, like me, just wanted to read about uni shenanigans.

I have mixed feelings on this one. On one hand I loved Phoebe and most of her people. On the other Luke was the WORST. He was a terrible human disguised as a nice guy. And I loved Josh and there was not nearly enough of him. All in all a fun read, but I want more Phoebe and Josh in my life.
I really liked the experience aspect of this book in that you really feel like you’re back in freshman year partying it up. It also had some extremely hilarious, not to mention spicy, moments.
I just really hated how miss Phoebe kind of ignored everyone else in the book except for Luke. Like yes, if my crush since 8th grade finally noticed me I’d probably act the same, but that doesn’t mean I’d completely be oblivious to everyone else? I guess I’m just annoyed that she didn’t end up with Luke or Josh even if both stories were built up, but I feel like I’d be mad at her if she ended up with one of them too. ??
For both Phoebe and Luke’s POVs I kind of feel like its so off kilter? Like they both don’t tell the whole story ever, you just feel like you’re getting very vague parts of it.
It’s very confusing, but I guess that’s how it really is to be a freshman.

I read this as I blog about student life and I wanted to read fiction that represented it. I found it to be more representative of high school relationships. Also how many times am I going to have to read / watch the condom getting stuck in the vagina storyline in rom com.
However I did like the slut shaming storyline and the small details such as how phones / social media can cause such drama / negative effects at uni.

I enjoyed the characters in the story and I liked reading about the freshman experience of college. Typically, YA is written during high school or the transition to college, but not really about teens during college. I liked how this book was different. It was cute and made me laugh,
However, I didn't feel like the overall problem in the story, the soccer team's group chat, to be a big enough deal to be the conflict of the entire story. Another problem I had was the crazy amount of pop culture refrences thrown in to the story. It didn't add anything to the characters or the plot and just felt excessive. It seemed as if they were only put in to make me relate to the characters more, which isn't how I relate to characters.
Overall, I thought it was a nice story, mainly due to that I really liked the characters and their development throughout the story, but the story still has issues.

I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would and found it to be a quick read. It was nice to read a YA book that was set in college and not high school. I liked the characters in this book and enjoyed that it was told from two perspectives. While I couldn't totally connect with them, I thought they were well written and believable although slightly over the top. I also liked that this book had the good, the bad and the ugly parts of going to college. I found it to be somewhat predictable (But YA tends to be) and a little bit messy which I found to be frustrating. The ending left me unsatisfied but overall I did enjoy this book.
