Noemi homeworld Genesis is at war with earth who has a line of mechs (I think there are about 20 models of mechs and each model do something specific like queens who are fighter mechs) that fights for them. Mia's world is losing and they are preparing to send 100 hundred of their pilots(Noemi included) to sacrifice themselves and therefore destabilize the gate that connects Earth to Genesis to buy some time for themselves.
But when an early attack leaves Noemi's step-sister dead and stranded on an abandoned ship with a strange mech she finds out that this Mech name is Abel and he was stuck here for 30 years and he knows a way to destroy the gate completely.
they go to other planets that were colonized by earth to get the necessary parts. Noemi finds out little by little that Abel is somewhat different than other Mechs.it seems 30 years of solitude have awakens a real consciousness with him.they meet many people and make some friends, travel to all colonized planets, Naomi even gets the cobweb a disease apparently develop by Earth that got out of control.
they develop feelings for each other along the way then Abel is taken against his will to hos creator who turns out wants to use Abel's body to host his conciseness and essentially destroying Abel's soul.
He escapes and with Naomi, they travel back to her system and when Abel is getting ready to pilot the ship that destroys the gate and the pilot of that ship, Naomi departs with the necessary parts to prevent him from doing so.
thay say goodbye to each other and Naomi manages to stop the Massada Run.
the world-building was very good and you could see how different the atmosphere had shaped the culture of each planet.
Naomi and Abel's characterization was also good and I was never really bored with their story.

“Where there’s no free will, there’s no sin.”
I don't even know what to say: This book was such a pleasant surprise and I did not, at all, expect to love it as much as I did!
Defy the Stars is by far the best book yet written by Claudia Grey. (Also, this is the first time her book doesn't have a love-triangle. Yay!) This is the kind of science fiction I was waiting for. I loved the characters, the slow burn enemies-to-friends-to-lovers romance (which actually didn't appear through most of the book, so don't worry about the story being way too romance centered: because it's not, at all), the world-building, fast pacing and all the amazing adventures and witty banter between the two protagonists. Oh, and also, he is a robot.
"Even ordinary things gain great power when we have been without them for too long."
“And as always, she wishes her most secret, most selfish wish: If only I could explore it all.”
P.S. I'd recommend this book even to those who didn't exactly love the Firebird trilogy. Because while I did not dislike that series, I didn't love it either: For me, it was 3 star series overall.
So even if you're not a fan of the author's previous works, I'd urge you to give Defy the Stars a chance!

Pre-review:
Because there are supposed to be robots in this, which I loved ever since Iko from TLCh!
I've generally heard that this one isn't as good as Gray's Firebird, and since I wasn't the biggest fan of the trilogy, maybe this one will work for me better, or worse.. We shall see.

This book was so much fun! It hit all of the check-marks that I look for in a book: great characters, great world building/setting, and great plot. The characters were a lot of fun, I especially liked getting to know Abel and see him progress as the story unfolded. I think my only issue was that this book could get a little repetative. Certain themes kept being brought up over and over again, which I get is important, but it could get annoying sometimes. But overall this was a really well executed syfy book that I would totally recommend!

Noemi’s battle tragedy leads her into the arms of an enemy “mech” named Abel. He’s unlike any thing she’s seen before, a phenomenally crafted...human!!?? Interplanetary wage gaps, rebellions, pollution. Character Development is left wanting. Slightly Interested in hearing what happens in book 2
I loved the characters in this. By the end of the story I was completely invested in them.
This book was so fast paced. Every time you turned the page there was a different problem, a different plan, and the inevitable outcome. I will say that in the beginning it was hard for me to root for Noemi and her mission to save Genesis. It does become easier as the book progresses to understand Noemi and her mission, but in the end I still don't think I agree with the leaders of Genesis. In all fairness I don't think Noemi agrees either.
Abel my sweetheart. Abel deserves everything! He's the logical one and yet also the emotional one. I loved him so much.
**** Great read, 4 stars ****
