3.5 stars

I thought this was pretty good. I liked the premise of a mech coming into full sentience and personhood. Abel's development is portrayed reasonably well here, and Noemi ended up being a more interesting character than I thought she would be at the outset. The story had a good pace and things unfolded nicely.

I've read several books by Claudia Gray and I generally enjoy them, but I do find her writing just a tiny bit flat for my taste. However, she does make up for that with fairly engaging if unchallenging storytelling, and this book is no exception. I'm hooked enough to read the next book in the series as planned.

Solid 3.5, but rounding up because it made me feel happy. 😊

When I first started this, I thought it was going to be a book mainly about space combat. It took me about 150 pages to in into it, but once I did I could not put it down. It's about so much more than just an intergalactic war; it's about humanity, duty, and the lengths people go to for those they love.

So basically, Earth has colonize several other planets and moons. A planet called Genesis is currently at war with the Earth; Noemi is a pilot on a suicide mission to break a gate to allow an attack. When her best friend is killed on a scouting mission, Noemi finds herself on a deserted Earth vessel that has a mech (robot, basically) who is been stranded on it for 30 years. The mech should be programmed to kill her, but when he doesn't she finds herself with an unlikely, of uneasy, ally as she tries to return home.

Well, no one is more disappointed with me than me that I didn't enjoy this book. I like Claudia Gray, but the writing style for Defy the Stars really threw me off.
I spent a good 80% letting my mind wonder, and the other 20% cringing at the actor doing Abel's parts. He was bad guys. BAD.
I might try this one in print later on to see if I enjoy it more, but I'm not holding my breath.
Whyyyyy can't I find a Sci-Fi that I LOVE these days?

A little too teen for me.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Noemi and Abel have my whole heart
adventurous challenging hopeful medium-paced
Plot or Character Driven: A mix
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes

Very interesting read.

I'm not sure if I agree with Gray's explanation of a soul. D=Yes, Abel did have a soul but did it arise because his cybernetic mind developed over the 30 years he was imprisoned? That seems a bit weak to me. I thought that that maybe he was half human or some type of android.

I like how the romance was second to the overall storyline of the series. That felt right.

Excited to read the sequel!

I loved it! Hands-down 5 stars.

This one is packed with both action and emotion. A great new twist on the AI conundrum. Reveal after reveal will shock you. I'm fascinated and a little in love with both MCs. I want more, more, more of this story.

This first book reads as a stand alone but leaves the story open to more intriguing action in future books. I can't wait!
